Statement:

College education at one point in time used to be optional, but now due to Americas evergrowing competitive job market, a college education has shifted to become a necessity for
success. Unfortunately due to high tuition costs and rapidly increasing interest rates on student
loans, higher education is a luxury few can afford. My campaign is determined to provide
affordable college education and therefore through our plan we aim decrease interest rates by
preventing the federal government from profiting off student loans and allowing former college
students to refinance their loans, secure an effective federal work study program, in which
students are able to work at a university appointed job for up to 10 hours a week to pay off
tuition debt, and finally by imposing a small tax on Wall Street, which would allow the
government to cover any remaining costs not remediated by lower interest rates and an
effective work study program.
Stance:
At one point in time, college was considered an optional step in the United States education
system. Today, a college education is a necessity in a competitive global job market.
Unfortunately, high tuition costs and rapidly increasing interest rates on student loans make
higher education a luxury few can afford. I wholeheartedly believe that a college education
should be available to those who desire it, regardless of socioeconomic background. My
campaign promotes affordable tuition and aims to unburden former and current college students
of the crippling debt that has been harnessed to them in the form of student loans. In the past
few years, interest rates on undergraduate loans have skyrocketed as high as 7%, while our
government made 66 billion dollars off of these loans over a period of six years. Absurdly high
interest rates make it impossible for many college graduates to quickly or effectively pay off their
debt. Under my plan, my administration would decrease interest rates by preventing the federal
government from profiting off student loans and allowing former college students to refinance
their loans. Another component that must be implemented to make college an affordable option
for everyone is to secure an effective federal work study program, in which students are able to
work at a university appointed job for up to 10 hours a week to pay off tuition debt. Most
importantly, imposing a small tax on Wall Street would allow the government to cover any
remaining costs not remediated by lower interest rates and an effective work study program.
Access to an affordable, quality college education should be considered the right of all
Americans. Providing our citizens with such opportunities is a necessary component in ensuring
that the United States remains competitive and educated on a global scale.
