The Cost Of An Education

An Out Of State
Perspective

The Problem?
The standard of living increases on a daily basis, and that includes
the price of an education. I am a middle class student from
Southern California studying out of state in at the University of
Utah.
How Is This A Problem?
Tuition is expensive and especially for an out of state
tuition is extremely expensive.

student,

Concern #1
Out of state schooling is expensive, even for students on the
higher end of the financial bracket.
For Example, at the University Of Utah, in state tuition is roughly around
$8,000-$9,000 versus out of state tuition is roughly $24,000-$26,000.
Cont. Including other necessities: In state is roughly around $15,000$24,000 versus Out of state being around $33,000-$45,000.

Concern #2
Financial Aid is hard to receive, especially if you are a middle class
student that is coming from a different state.
Financial Aid for an out of state student is very minimal for most
students going to an out of state school. It is more likely for an in
state student to receive financial aid due to being in state
Loans are a form of financial aid provided for most students, but
comes with its risks.
Loans have high interest rates so when a student that is out of state
graduates, the loan would have grown by that period of time.

Concern #3
A residency is a period of time in which an out of state student has
to be in the state of the institution he/she is attending for a year.
Most families have a hard time dealing with sending off their
students for a year out of state.

Why is this a problem?

Out Of State tuition is an unfair system towards U.S. citizens traveling to
different states to have an education. The system is extremely costly and
depending on the school is nearly double to triple the standard in state tuition.
The biggest concerning aspect is the fact that students end up transferring to
lower end schools due to financial issues. Some cases have shown even
dropping out of these major universities.
*I am not for free tuition but I am for equal opportunity, and to me that means
having a quality education at a fixed cost.

Are their any solutions to this problem?

1. Higher Education can rethink allocating income and reduce the
price of out of state tuition in which its not extremely price
heavy.
2. Universities can publicize that they indirectly go against
institutional code (which most schools have) which states equal
opportunity for all students.
3. REDUCE the amount of spending towards extra curricular
activities and promote the idea to students of raising money for
clubs and etc.
