Expanding the federal governments responsibilities to protect the environment


(e.g., Dust Bowl and the Tennessee Valley), meet challenges of unemployment,
address the needs of workers, farmers, poor, and elderly

Opposition to the New Deal and the impact of the Supreme Court in striking down
and then accepting New Deal laws

Consequences of New Deal policies (e.g., promoting workers rights,


development of Social Security program, and banking and financial regulation
conservation practices, crop subsidies)

Learning Targets
You will be able to:

Identify and define the New Deal and its purpose using the
Three Rs.
Discuss and evaluate the effectiveness of FDRs New Deal in
dealing with the Great Depression, giving examples of both
positives and negatives.
Identify and explain FDRs attempts to protect the environment in
the region devastated by the Dust Bowl and the Tennessee Valley.
Identify some of the opposition and arguments against the FDR
and the New Deal programs.
Evaluate the impact of the New Deal (and expansion of
government) on the United States.

1. What is the role of government within our society?
2. What is the role of government during economic hard times?
3. How much power (control) should the government have over our daily
lives and private businesses.
