GENERAL REFLECTION
Overall, how successful was this lesson?
Overall, the lesson was very effective. The interactive partner work and physical activity made unit rates
tangible to students who struggle to understand the abstract concepts and real world applications of math.
The students were able to accurately create rates, make calculations, and write and solve word problems
involving unit rates. The lesson incorporated differentiated instruction to reach all different types of
learners.
GOALS/OBJECTIVES
In what ways were your goals/objectives appropriate for your students?
My content objectives were entirely appropriate for students. They goal to complete on-grade level tasks
with significant support was very appropriate.
In what ways were they not appropriate?
Though I believe all the objectives were appropriate, they could have been separated into two days as we
did not have adequate time to expand on the ordering and comparing of rates with classmates during the
class period.

ASSESSMENT
How effective were your assessment strategies in measuring student achievement of the learning goals/
objectives for this lesson?
Formative assessment was effective in allowing me to address errors and misconceptions throughout the
lesson. Assessment of the deliverable (worksheet) from the activity allowed me to assess the accuracy of
student calculations and more formally assess their ability to write and calculate unit rates. The
entrance/exit slip also allowed me to understand the students ability to write and solve word problems,
assessing their skills in yet another way.
Would you make any changes to the assessments strategies you used? What changes would you make and
why?
I would not make changes to the assessment strategies I used for this activity.

ALTERATIONS
Did you depart in any way from your plan? If so, how? Why?
Yes, we did not have time to compare rates and create a human number line, so that portion of the lesson
was omitted. This did not affect the success of the specific content objectives as that part of the lesson was
included to incorporate and review skills learned and practiced earlier in the year.
INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY Respond to these questions for each aspect.

Instructional
Strategies

Were the following aspects of your

instructional delivery effective for all
students? Why or why not?

What would you do differently to

improve the lesson?

Yes. Instruction was designed to

reach all different types of
learners including kinesthetic,
auditory, and visual strategies.

I would not change the

instructional strategies.

Student
Grouping

Student
Activities

Materials, Resources,
and Technology

Students were grouped in

partners which was effective and
allowed for collaboration.

I would allow students to spread

out more and switch partners for
the entrance/exit ticket and
Whats Your Rate? activity to
allow students to see different
perspectives and collaborate with
additional peers. With the
additional class in our room,
movement was limited so this was
not easy to complete on this
specific day.
The activity was very effective,

a abstract concept physical and

tangible to students and facilitated jumping jacks, alphabet, and hops
student collaboration.
