Statement of Standard Seven: Planning for Instruction

The teacher plans instruction that supports every student in meeting rigorous learning
goals by drawing upon knowledge of content areas, curriculum, cross-disciplinary skills,
and pedagogy, as well as knowledge of learners and the community context (NJPTSB,
2014, pg 9).
Name of Artifact: 30 minute Lesson Demo
Date of Artifact: April 14, 2016
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-01

Rationale Statement:
For this artifact I had to present a lesson demo to my classmates. I chose to
teach my classmates about derivatives from the earlier units of calculus. This artifact
directly correlates with the Essential Knowledge Standard 7.1 which states, The teacher
understands content and content standards and how these are organized in the
curriculum (10). I believe the content of my lesson meets the Common Core State
Standards as my lesson is research and evidence based, clear and understandable,
aligned with college and career expectations, based on rigorous content and the
application of knowledge through higher-order thinking skills, built upon the strengths
and lessons of current state standards, and will prepare students for success.
While working on this artifact, I learned that putting together a lesson takes time.
A lot of time. This one, half hour lesson took me nearly six hours to complete. Doing that

for a 180 day school year is going to be brutal, and I have gained a newfound respect for
my previous teachers.
If I end up teaching calculus I would love to use this artifact in my future
classroom. I had a lot of fun working on this, and I tried to make it as entertaining as
possible for my classmates, so hopefully my future students will find it equally as
entertaining.
