LESSON OBJECTIVE
After a reading and discussion about the Hispanic culture in Texas, students will write a
summary of the history and influence of the Hispanic culture in Texas with 100 percent factual
accuracy.

LEARNING STRATEGIES

EXCEPTIONALITY

The student with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder will be able to come up to the
board and actively participate in the lesson in order to gain their attention and have them
actively involved in class.
The student with a significant motor disability will use a voice-to-text application for
writing assignments.
The student with a vision impairment will use an iPad with larger font to read the text.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Tier 1: Students will read and answer questions about the Hispanic culture in Texas. Students
will be given a list of key terms and questions prior to the reading.
Tier 2: Students will read and answer questions about the Hispanic culture in Texas.
Tier 3: Students will read about the Hispanic culture in Texas and write a description of the key
terms and concepts found in the text.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES

1. Students will walk in to the classroom listening to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom by Selena.
What region of the United States is the music from? What elements can be heard in the
music?
2. Students will read about the Hispanic culture of Texas on The Hispanic Culture in the
United States. This will be followed by a Think-Pair-Share activity in which the student
discusses what they read with a partner and shares with the class during a class
discussion. Why is Hispanic culture so prevalent in Texas? How is the history of Texas
tied to Mexico? In what ways is the Hispanic culture still evident in Texas today? What
Hispanic holidays are celebrated heavily in Texas? What are the misconceptions related
to some of the Hispanic traditions?
3. The students will complete a smart notebook activity for which they must come up to the
Smart board and match the word with the description. When do Texans celebrate the
Battle of Puebla? What competitive sport arose from cattle herding in Mexico? What war
was caused by the annexation of Texas? In what holiday, are the lives of the deceased
celebrated? With what act did Mexico finally recognize that Texas was part of the United
States?
4. The students will complete an online exit ticket on the lesson. What is one important
thing that you learned today? Has todays lesson changed your views of the Hispanic
culture in Texas and in what way? What aspect of the Hispanic culture in Texas would
you like to learn more about?

ARTIFACTS AND ASSESSMENT


Students will successfully complete a Smart Notebook activity in which they must match
key terms from the reading with the correct description. Students will complete an online exit
ticket on the lesson. For homework, the students will write an essay on the Hispanic culture in
Texas.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Following the lesson on the Hispanic culture in Texas, the students will write an essay on
the Hispanic culture of Texas. This essay must answer the following questions: Why is Texas so
heavily influenced by the Hispanic culture? In what ways is the Hispanic culture still evident in
Texas today? A rough draft must be written and submitted in class, while the final copy is to be
submitted on The Hispanic Culture in the United States website.

FOLLOW-UP: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADAMIC


ENRICHMENT
Direct Teacher Intervention: The student, under direct intervention with the teacher, will create
index cards with pictures and label them with important facts and key terms from the reading.
Academic Enrichment: The student will use the computer to research and create a timeline of all
of the historical events in Texas leading up to present day. This timeline must focus on, but is not
limited to, the events of the Texas Revolution and the Mexican-American War.
