PROCEDURE
Introduction: __2__ minutes
Hook: To be done after practice time
Housekeeping: We are going to have practice time first thing today because I short-changed you
guys yesterday. If you have to do your demonstration, I will give you a few minutes to warm up and
run through your piece a few times, then lets get those out of the way. You will have about 25
minutes, when I start playing music on the computer, come on over. You should be using this time to
look at the pieces you can do for demo 3, trying them out, and deciding, I will be asking you
tomorrow what you will be playing.
Body: ____ minutes

Activity #1: practice time (25 minutes)
See housekeeping
Intro: as the end of 25 minutes approaches, start playing Darius Ruckers Wagon Wheel (8
minutes)
Explain the connection to what we are looking at today.
Does anyone know what groups Darius Rucker has been a part of?
Does anyone know who originally did this song?
Why this matters is that we will be looking at some of the music that Darius Rucker did earlier in his
career and other people in such genres. Also, a lot of the groups that we are looking at today have a
very strong influence from the rock of the 60s, particularly Bob Dylan.
Activity #2: The rise of classic rock (8 minutes)
The CD brings everything back! Baby boomers with the money can buy all of their favourite
music on this better audio technology. This means that radios were also playing more classic
rock (its still a popular model today) and since the young gen. was hearing it, they liked it
too. Classic rock almost out-shinned mainstream.
Jamming comes back into popularity
British bands at this time are very British invasion influenced
Listen to Creep to hear the atmospheric feel of Pink Floyd and the Progressive rock artists
Activity #3: Pop Rock (10 minutes)
Feel good rock as a lighthearted, upbeat reaction to grunge
Strong classic rock revival in San Francisco
Listen to Mr. Jones by Counting Crows and listen/watch for the early rock elements that
we see.
You also get some bands with a harder edge to them.
Tonnes of teen idol groups with both returns to classic Motown and the girl group and teen
idol themes of the 60s.
Activity #4: Female Singer-Songwriters (7 minutes)
Inspired by the similar movement in the 70s
Authenticity becomes a very important factor
Listen to Alanis Morisettes Ironic
Activity #5: Journal time! (20 minutes)
If you finish early you can play, but please, I dont want you practicing until you have handed in
your journal. This one might require some individual research, please feel free to do so.
Closure: __2__ minutes

LESSON REFLECTION
Two things that went well:
I actually really liked the playing lecture work time. It worked super well then I knew that I
2

wouldnt cheap them on playing time Also, it transitioned really well, I wish I would have started
doing this sooner, the one thing I am worried about is that the playing time is what they look forward
to, so that might present a slight issue. Its worth trying out!
I feel like I wasnt rambling too much today which is awesome, that is definitely something I
struggle with.
One thing to work on:
One main concern is that I havent really seen any of E., I think she has missed more classes
than she has been present for, and Im a little worried. I know there have been some health
concerns, but at this point Im worried that its that she doesnt like the class and finds it
easier to not come (I know that she has a first block spare). Im also worried about A. this is
the third class in a row she has missed. Shes really good and engaged and loving the
material when she is here, but once again, Im barely seeing her. Hopefully they are both here
tomorrow and I can have a conversation with them.
