NEWS
News is a factual programme that gives the general public the latest news that has
happened in the past 24 hours or a story that is occurring longer than that such as the EU
referendum. The day to day conventions of news programmes that are shown to us include,
studio news readers, eye witnesses, interviews, mode of address. The mode of address
(teddiebmxa, 2012) includes the formality of the new show, BBC and ITV will be very formal
by wearing a suit and tie for Males while the Women will wear dresses, these show the
seriousness of the show.

EXAMPLE OF A NEWS SHOW


ITV news at 10 is a show that is shown after the watershed so they stories
that they show to the public will be much darker and more violent things
that have been going on in the world.
They still show happy stories at the 10 o clock news but usually the more
violent stories are shown as there will be no children to watch it.

DOCUMENTARY
A documentary will usually be told to you using a voice over (teddiebmxa, 2012) , this usually
helps the audience think that they have some kind of expert knowledge.
Documentaries are shown as non fictional.
Sometimes they have a person go to the actual place where it is being filmed and talk to the
camera, such as David Attenborough where he will go face to face with what he is explaining.
The shows include interviews with experts.
A lot of the sound is edited into the documentary, theyll add some extra sound to the
surroundings that the host is in.

EXAMPLE OF A DOCUMENTARY
An example of a documentary is David Attenboroughs shows, he will go into ,for
example, the rainforest and go face to face with the creatures that he is talking about
directly to the camera.
A lot of what David Attenboroughs programmes are done with voice overs too which will
go along with some imagery which will go with the theme of the TV programme.

DOCUSOAP
A docusoap is a reality tv show that follows the lives of people, this includes the general
conventions, it is almost like a soap as there is usually a lot of drama but it also follows people
who are now famous because of the show.
Mise En Scene: Background of interviews reflects subject or person - Chromakey Location
Editing: Cut - To not distract from subject matter - Dissolve can be used, but effects are kept to
a minimum, e.g fast motion, slow motion - Effects can be used as elliptical editing, such as
fade to black

EXAMPLE OF A DOCUSOAP
An example of a docusoap is Made in Chelsea, they follow all of the
conventions that were shown in the previous slide. The show usually
includes being with the stars and having a lot of drama and problems in
their life to entertain the fans, the exact same thing happens in shows like
The Only Way is Essex.

INFOTAINMENT
Infotainment is a documentary that has a lot of information in it but it is
entertaining so it will have a lot of comedy.
Its factual and useful for the audience.
Aimed at all ages.

EXAMPLE OF INFOTAINMENT
An example of infotainment is Top Gear, the programme gives a lot of
information about cars and do many tasks with them.
The programme is also entertaining and funny, most of its success came
from it witty presenters.

REALITY TV
Reality TV is factual programming in the sense that it documents unscripted
real-life situations.
Usually has an unknown cast who arent actors.
Its main focus is on drama, personal conflict and entertainment instead of
educating the views.

EXAMPLE OF REALITY TV
An example of reality TV is Big Brother.
The show has people who arent celebrities and cameras are on the
documenting their day to day life living in the big brother house.

EDUCATIONAL
Aneducational filmis a film or movie whose primary purpose is toeducate.
Educational films have been used in schoolrooms as an substitute to
otherteaching approaches.
Educational documentaries are purely to educate viewers on the subject
that is being documented.

EXAMPLE OF EDUCATIONAL TV
An example of educational tv is Brainiac.
The show does cool experiments to educate the viewers and the presenters
usually funny and confident on camera to educate the viewers which most
of the time will be children.

WILDLIFE
A wildlife documentary is a film that usually takes about, animals, plants or
any other non human creatures.
The show will usually focus on its natural habitat.
Sometimes they are about wild animals, plants or ecosystems which have
some kind relationship to humans.

EXAMPLE OF WILDLIFE
An example of a wildlife documentary is many of David Attenboroughs
documentaries.
David Attenborough goes face to face with many animals in their natural
habitat to get the best footage for the audience to see and enjoy.

SPECIAL INTERESTS
Special interests are not very popular but a interesting to a minority.
Not many people watch it but the people who do it will interesting for them
and teach them a set of skills.

EXAMPLE OF SPECIAL INTERESTS


An example of special interests is Antiques Roadshow.
It highlights a topic that is not very popular but it usually helps people with
a hobby, so people who are interested in antiques will usually watch this
and may partake.

EXAMPLE OF MAKEOVER TV SHOWS


Extreme makeover home edition is a tv show where they help people who are
less fortunate.
It has a host who talks to the people who are working on the house.
The show also shows transformations of before the house and after the house is
done.
It also shows emotions of happiness of the people who's house has just be
completely redone.

MAGAZINE
Magazine is a publication that is issued weekly.
It is usually done it essays, stories and poems by many writers.
Photographs and drawings are included in each weekly issue.

EXAMPLE OF MAGAZINES
An example of a magazine is Hello magazine.
Hello magazine covers the latest celebrity and royal news from the UK and
around the world including, exclusives, celebrity babies, weddings and
pregnancies.

DISCUSSION
A discussion is the action of talking about something in order to reach a
decision or to exchange ideas.
A discussion on TV would be mainly formal talking about serious matters
such as politics.
I is usually done in a big group of people giving ideas, opinions and
information on the subject.

EXAMPLE OF A DISCUSSION SHOW


An example of a discussion tv show is the Big Question on BBC One.
It is hosted by Nicky Campbell who gets into debates about moral, ethical
and religious debates.
The show has an audience who take part in the debate, they ask questions,
give their ideas and opinions.

REVIEWS
A review is a formal assessment of something that someone has done work
on or publication, service and company such as a movie review.
The review are formal and in the media, shows are usually given a rating
out of five stars with an explanation to why they have given them the
chosen rating.

EXAMPLE OF A REVIEW
An example of a review is done on the Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.
The review gives a detailed analysis of the film.
It tells you some points of the film to explain how good the film is.
It gives a conclusion and maybe a reason as to why to watch the film.

CHAT SHOW
A chat show is either on television or on the radio.
Celebrities are invited in to talk informally about various topics.
Celebrities usually go onto the show to help promote something that they
have done or to promote a film or book that they are in or have written.

EXAMPLE OF A CHAT SHOW


An example of a chat show is The Graham Norton Show.
Graham Norton presents the show focusing on people, trends, stories and
aspects of celebrity culture.
The celebrities that are invited on are dressed formally but the language
used can be informal, the show also has many aspects of comedy.
