Video Installation Definition

Video installation is a contemporary art form that combines video technology with installation art,
making use of all aspects of the surrounding environment to affect the audience.
Examples of video installation
Current
1) The Museum of Moving Image in Queens, New York uses simple technology that utilised a
simple method of hanging white boards off the ceiling and had documentaries projected onto

them to display them.


2) The National Museum of Natural History in the
Smithsonian institute in Washington DC had a
giant sphere in the centre of a room, with 4
projectors being projected onto the sphere
which made the sphere look like the Earth.
Whilst it was being projected it had information

about the Earths history coming alive on the sphere.

3) At the National Museum in Singapore, a new installation is in place called A Moment of Unity
which was made to capture the feelings of a week of national mourning after the found prime
minister of Singapore died. The video shows pictures taken throughout the week of the
mourning period, however they have been edited to make it seem that the photos have come

to life.

4) Museum of moving image, they had Zoetropes set up in exhibition for people to see the
projection and how it use to work. you were able to look through the eye hole and see moving
images. this is the earliest form
of video installation.

5) Zoopraziscope. similar to the zoetrope but more modern another form of video installation in
1880.
