3. Research and information fluency: students use the internet to research their nutrient
before using powerpoint
4. Critical thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: students use critical thinking
to calculate the percentage of the daily intake.
Materials and Equipment:
*Technology:
Computers or tablets with internet access
Computers with Microsoft word
*Print Materials: poster board, markers, provided worksheet to guide them
through their research.
*Other Media: Internet,
Introductory Activity:
The teacher will begin the lesson by:
a. introducing the six essential nutrients for a human body which are carbohydrates,
protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water.
b.
Because water is the most basic one, the teacher will start by giving an example of
the total daily intake of water, what are other sources of water than just drinking it,
and why it is important for your body to drink water.
Learning Activities:
The students will then break up into five groups to research the rest of the six essential
elements.
a
c. The teacher will hand out the worksheet provided to guide the students through their
research.
d. The students will research their topic and answer the questions on the worksheet.
e. After completing the worksheet the students will collaborate to create a healthy meal
plan with the correct amount of their nutrient using Microsoft Word.
e. They will use word to start a portfolio of the meal plan they created. They will create
a document on word with the 6 meals for the day. They will add pictures and captions to
create the Nutrition portfolio on Word.
f. Students will then present their meal plan to class using a poster board, markers, and
pictures.
-Teacher will encourage the students to be creative while presenting. For
example a groups who has vitamins as their nutrient could all dress up like
fruits
and vegetables.
Formative Evaluation: While the students are doing their research and filling out the
questions on the work sheet, the teacher will walk around making sure the children are
staying on task and asking questions about what they have learned so far about their
nutrient.
Culminating Activities: At the end, the students will give a presentation to the class
explaining the nutrient they had and the meal plan they made they will each print their
word document to begin their Health and Wellness Portfolio.
Summative Evaluation: A rubric is provided below to evaluate the students work and
ability to follow directions.
Cross-Curricular Extensions: This activity is beneficial for the students, because they
are enhancing their mathematical skills by finding the percentage of the total intake of
their particular intake in a day. They are also using powerpoint to create their
presentation to the class.
Directions: Answer the questions below to guide you through your research to
ultimately design a meal plan to show why your specific nutrient is essential to the
human body.
