Basic Information
Title

Radial paper relief

Summary

Students will create a relief sculpute using folded paper that radiates
around one central point.

Grade/Level

Grade 5

Time Frame

2 45 minute classes

Subject(s)

Art

Modifications

As a plan B if there were no colored sheets of paper. Use white and paint or
color the paper by adding another day to the lesson. one on one follow ups
to make sure the students are understanding. Students can also turn over
their folded paper and by overlapping the folded side create their relief that
way.

MA- Massachusetts Core Course Objectives (2014)

Subject:
The Arts
Grade Range:
5-8
Area:
Visual Arts
Objective:
Students demonstrate knowledge of the methods, materials, and
techniques unique to the visual arts.
Indicator:
Students maintain the workspace, materials, and tools
responsibly and safely.
Objective:
Students demonstrate knowledge of the processes of creating and
exhibiting their own artwork: drafts, critique, self-assessment,
refinement, and exhibit preparation.
Indicator:
Students produce work that shows understanding of and
demonstrates growth in craftsmanship.

MA- Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks

Subject: Visual Arts

Strand: The Arts Disciplines
Standard 1: Methods, Materials, and TechniquesStudents will
demonstrate knowledge of the methods, materials, and techniques
unique to the visual arts.
Grade 6-8:
Learning Standard 1.5:
Expand the repertoire of 2D and 3D art processes, techniques,
and materials with a focus on the range of effects possible
within each medium, such as: 2D transparent and opaque
media, wet, dry, stippled, blended, wash effects; relief
printmaking effects; 3D mobile and stabile forms, carved,
molded, and constructed forms
Learning Standard 1.7:
Use the appropriate vocabulary related to the methods,
materials, and techniques students have learned and used in
grades PreK8
Learning Standard 1.8:
Maintain the workspace, materials, and tools responsibly and
safely
Standard 2: Elements and Principles of DesignStudents will
demonstrate knowledge of the elements and principles of design.
Grade 6-8:
Learning Standard 2.11:
For space and composition, create unified 2D and 3D
compositions that demonstrate an understanding of balance,
repetition, rhythm, scale, proportion, unity, harmony, and
emphasis. Create 2D compositions that give the illusion of 3D
space and volume
Standard 4: Drafting, Revising, and ExhibitingStudents will
demonstrate knowledge of the processes of creating and exhibiting
their own artwork: drafts, critique, self-assessment, refinement, and
exhibit preparation.
Grade 6-8:
Learning Standard 4.4:
Produce work that shows an understanding of the concept of
craftsmanship

Overarching Goal

The students will make art that demonstrated their newly learned
knowledge in radial design and how it is used in art. They will be able to
identify relief sculptures easily in art. All achieved by completing a radial
paper relief with multi colored papers to create pattern inside of pattern
that pops out of a black paper.

Understandings and Lesson

Objectives

The students will demonstrate knowledge of what radial symmetry is, what
a relief is compared to a sculpture, how to create their own radial design,
and the arrangement of composition.

Essential Questions

Unit (Guiding) Questions

What defines sculpture?

Where can you find a radial design?
What materials do artists use to create sculptures?

How many of each shape fit in the center of the black paper?

How many different ways can your relief sculpture be split into two
and still be the same?

Knowledge and Skills

Students will use paper folding to demonstrate knowledge of relief

sculptures. Students will create a composition using radial design and relief
sculpture. Students will demonstrate craftsmanship in the technique of
folding, arranging and gluing of paper.

Performance Tasks And Assessment

Performance Task/ Activity

The students will create a radial relief using multiple colored folded papers.

Motivation

The students will see a powerpoint and have a class discussion on the
different types of symmetry, reliefs, sculptures, and radial designs as well
as learn the different types of folds to get the different types of styles that
could be included in their reliefs.

Learning Experiences And Resources

Routines

Each seat at each table has a job (ex. table leader, noise moniter, folders,
supplies) for clean up and once the class has cleaned up if there is time the
set up for the next class begins.

Instructional Approaches

Choice-based/discovery learning, craft, design education

Sequence of Activities

Differentiated Instruction
and Adaptations

1. The students will arrive to the classroom and watch a presentation

covering radial symmetry, linear symmetry, relief, sculptures, paper
folding, along with their expectations.
2. Students will recieve a handout on the different types of folds they
are able to use in thier reliefs.
3. Using different colored 3 inch square pieces of paper the students
will learn the different types of folds.
4. The black 12x 12 piece of paper will be folded to create their
background.
5. The students can then create their relief any way they wish using the
different folds or try a new fold.
6. Before glueing down any pieces of paper the students must make
sure that the radial design is what they are aiming for. It is
encouraged at this point for students to check with the teacher
before beginning to glue down their relief.
7. Once ready the students can glue down the folded papers starting at
the center and working their way outwards.
SEI/ ELL= There will be alot of demonstrations to ensure understanding as
well as a picture handout.

Gifted/talented= advanced = These students will be expected to complete

their radial design with either small folded pieces or make their own folds.
special education= There will be alot of demonstrations to ensure
understanding as well as a picture handout.
at risk learners = These students can alternate between two different folds
on their relief. These two fold can also be the two simple folds as long as it
is still radial.

Key Words / Vocabulary

Materials and resources:

Powerpoint presentation
The number of computers required is 1.
relief sculpture- a piece of artwork that has depth or different levels on the
surface but is not meant to be seen from all sides. There are three basic
forms of relief sculpture: bas-relief (low relief), in which the sculpture is
raised only slightly from the background surface; alto-relievo (high relief),
in which part of the sculpture is rendered in three dimensions;
and intaglio (sunken-relief), in which the image is carved into the surface
material.
sculpture- A piece of artwork that you can see from all sides it is 3dimensional
radial symmetry- going from the center outward or from the circumference
inward along a radius. Arranged like radii or rays.
linear symmetry- It is type of symmetry in which a line is drawn from the
middle of the figure. the part of the figure on one side of the dotted line
falls exactly over the other part which lies on the side.
