Midterm Reflection Assignment

What Ive Learned


In the first half of the semester Ive learned how
to write formal letters of concern; write response
letters and how to analyze website. Helping me
to write in a more professional and successful
manner.

Through this assignment I learned how to:


Identify and apply the five steps of successful business writing (e.g. preparation; research,
organization; writing and revising )
Identifying your audience and effectively appealing to them
The importance of presentation of the information you want to communicate successfully to
the audience
How to direct my work properly for the intended audience
Effectively using workplace writing and identifying the technologies that are essential to
such writing processes.

Write effective business letters, memos and emails
Who is your audience and the style of writing you want to use to communicate the point
of your message
Implementing action/honey statements to leave a good tone with the reader
How deliver a message without going off point to the reader
Effectively writing a complaint letter

Basic Design Principles
Through this assignment I learned how to:
How to format a document like charts, flow charts such as layout and design within documents
The importance of layout and design like grouping, repetition and contract, typography
Consider what outline to use for the message you are trying to get across such as headings,
columns, color, justification, etc. within your layout
Layout your document for visual effect by using flowcharts, graphs or tables, etc.

Analysis of Style & Clarity


Content, Layout & Design/Business Writing Documents and Elements
Through this assignment I learned how to:
Review proposals; report such as feasibility report, incident/trouble reports, recommendation
report, progress reports, etc.
Analyze your audience; visual appeal; dividing writing into manageable segments; using poised
and positive constructive tone
Effectively designing websites
Understand the importance of layout, clarity and simplification of a website

How was it learned


I was able to learn all of the different forms of writing by reading the contents in our Business
Writers Companion book. Specifically important to this process was learning the five steps
of successful business writing. I learned by viewing the different videos our professor
uploaded online. By actually doing peer reviews and getting feedback from other peers in
our class, I learned how to better understand some of the assignments given to us for review
and correction. There is no single assignment that I can relate the five steps too, because
preparation, research, organization, writing, and revision were apart of all assignments .

How was it learned


I learned how to direct work properly for the intended audience by first reading and thoroughly
going through chapter one. Chapter two helped me to understand the different technologies
available and how to adapt them to different types of business communications (such as text
messages, blogs, social media, etc.) What really helped me get a more clear understanding of
the Five Steps to Successful Writing was the contents I read and the notes I took in Chapter
4. Learning the general principles on emails, letters and memos was important information
that I was able to apply to my WA1 assignment. Chapter Ten on Style and Clarity was a really
intriguing chapter because of the fact that it helped me develop a style that I believe to be a
clear and effective style in my writing.

How was it learned


Effectively managing the physical appearance of a document and or
presentation is very important in professional writing. Although I learned
about all of this throughout chapter 7, I learned more about this by analyzing
the content, and layout and design of a poorly designed website in Analysis
Assignment 3. I was really able to understand how important the physical
appearance of an document matters, when trying to be appealing to the
audience.

Why it matters
All this learning matters to me because of the following reasons:
1. Most importantly learning all of this matters to me, because I intend to make it far in the
business world and you never know what business opportunities will come my way. That
being said, being able to write effective and clear business documents, I feel will give me
an advantage in the business world. Knowing who is your audience and how to impress
them in the business world I feel will be key to my success.
2. When I have my own business venture I want to be able to design a website that would
grow my business. The information Ive learned so far would enable me to help design a
layout for my website that would be captivating to all audiences and would use little tricks
in order to draw in the audience to the point where they want to know more about my
company.

Im not really sure, how what I have learned so far will help me in future courses because I
have yet to embark on a course that requires such attention to the details Ive learned. I feel
that my goals when writing a document have been set to a higher level with the knowledge I
have gained thus far in this course. There is always room for improvement in everything that
we do in life. I will set higher yet realistic goals in my preparation when doing research papers
and writing important letters to during the course of obtaining my college degree.
