The Unit of Pie

Undesirable Behavior Targeted:
During transitions, especially when coming back from lunch, students are talking out of turn,
shouting out, talking to other students when working on an activity, getting out of their seat when
supposed to be sitting and working or listening, using inappropriate language, and creating off
topic conversations. These behaviors lead the student doing these behaviors and the students
around them to get off task and become distracted very easily.
Desirable Behavior Targeted:
Students will communicate effectively by raising your hand and waiting to be called on, focus
on the assignment or discussion we are working on in the classroom at that time, ask questions,
or offer some appropriate, on task comments, and engage in classroom discussions.
Type of Positive Reinforcements Reinforced- when and how?
1. Immediate R+: Slice of the Pie: when effective communication and appropriate
conversations are observed, the class will earn a slice of the pie.
2. Ongoing R+: The class or teacher will take the earned slice and place it at the front of
the room so the class can see how many more slices they need to finish the pie.
3. Overall R+: Students will be working to complete a whole pie as a class.
4. During transitions, especially after lunch time, I will monitor the behaviors and
communication between students. If the students show effective and appropriate
conversations and participation until the end of the period, the class will earn a slice of
the pie. At the end of the period, I will add the slice to the board so they can see their
progress.
Interactive Learning Activity: 111.42.4 B Number and Measure
Once the students earn all of the pie, the class will demonstrate their memorization and
understanding of the unit circle by dividing our pies using the slices of the unit circle. We
will then get a pie for lunch, such as pizzas, cookies, cake, ect., where they will get to show,
through a hands on process, the parts of the unit circle and how it is divided.
Teach the Desired Behaviors:
I will demonstrate the desired behaviors such as communicating effectively and appropriately
and fully participating. On the first day of teaching these behaviors, I will have the class
individually write down what they think these behaviors would look like and then make a class
list. After discussing what the desired behaviors look like, they will earn a slice of the pie.
Explain HOW you will teach the plan:
Each day before lunch, I will demonstrate what behaviors are to be expected when they arrive
back to the classroom after lunch. I will also remind them that they are working to complete the
pie as a class, it will take more than just one person to do the behaviors. When the desired
behavior is portrayed until the end of the period, I will explain to the class that they have earned
the slice of the pie. When they complete the pie,16 slices given, which will show the entire unit
circle, we will then have a real pie to divide into slices using the unit circle. The class will only
be able to earn one slice a day.
Provide options:
Types of pie: pizza, pie, cake, cookie cake, cheesecake, individual cookies, pancakes, and
quesadillas.
Materials:
1. Knife/pizza cutter
2. Napkins
3. Plates
4. Additional materials differ
according to food.
