What are steroids?


Steroids hormones are naturally produced in your body
to fight stress and to promote growth and
development.
Common names are
Roids
Juices
Gym candy
Pumpers
Andro
Stackers

How do steroids effect the


brain?
Attaches and reacts with the Androgen
receptors in the brain
Androgen- DNA based and controls testosterone
levels
After being attached to the receptors, it quickly
increases the testosterone and protein
synthesis levels.
Aka, makes proteins build faster.

Anabolic vs. Catabolic


Catabolic steroids are often confused
with anabolic steroids, which are used to
build muscle mass. In fact, catabolic
steroids have the opposite effect,
breaking down muscle mass. They are
frequently used to reduce significant
swelling, and to treat autoimmune
diseases or severe asthma. (Kuan, Anita.)
More than 100 variations of anabolic.

Medical purposes
Delayed puberty in adolescent boys
Breast cancer for women
Anemia
Osteoporosis
Weight loss disease in HIV
Other conditions with hormonal imbalance

How anabolic steroids came


about
Initially most popular within Olympic athletes.
1970s pro sports were catching onto this new
phenomenon.
1975 they were banned
After repeated use even after they were banned, the
Anti Drug Abuse Act of 1988 and the Anabolic Steroid
Enforcement Act of 1990 made it ILLEGAL to use
steroids.

When all pro athletes around you are
good, they look for that tiny edge to
get them ahead.

Are they Addictive?


They are not as addictive as other drugs, physically.
Mentally they are very addictive as results continue to
show.
"Regardless, there is no question that when regular
steroid users stop taking the drug they get withdrawal
pains and if they start up again the pain goes away.
They have difficulties stopping use even though they
know it's bad for them, (ESPN.)
Muscle dismorphia- reverse anorexia. They believe
their body will forever be imperfect.

Dosage/ Sequence?
Illegal anabolic steroids is 10 to 100 times more
than any prescription steroid given.
Cycling-Drug may be used in cycles of 4-8 week
periods so the body does not build too high of a
tolerance.
Stacking- combining two or more different kinds
of steroids.

Pyramiding-It can go in a cycle of a really low dosage,
and build up dosage closer to an event and then
tapers off in order to not get caught during event.
Then goes back to a low dosage and builds up again
so the body can still regulate off of testosterone.

Schedule?
Sine 1990 they have been classified as a schedule III
controlled substances.
Schedule 3 means-accepted medical use, and mild to
moderate possible addiction. Other schedule 3
include;
Low-dose Codeine, and Hydrocodone-based opioids.

Testing
Within sports they are at random to encourage the
elimination of anabolic steroids at any time.
More commonly tested through a urine test.
If test is positive, athlete is often banned from the
sport.
Awards can be taken away, depending on time of use.

Legal consequences?
1rst time simple possession has
maximum penalty of 1 year in prison
and $1,000 fine.
1rst offense trafficking in steroids
maximum penalty is 5 years in prison
with $250,000 fine.
2nd offense doubles the penalty.
