Final Systematic Observation Report
1) Overview
A) SOFIT: System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time is a tool used to
measure whether or not a student is engaging in MVPA in 10 second
intervals. If the student is engaging in MVPA during that interval, the recorder
marks yes. If not, the recorder marks no. When the lesson is over, the
recorder adds up the amount of 10 seconds intervals marked yes to find the
total MVPA.
B) Time Analysis: This tool is used to measure the total time spent during a
teachers lesson on activity, management, and instruction. In 15 second
intervals, the recorder will mark whether 50% of the class was engaged in
either activity, management, or instruction. Once the lesson is done, the
recorder adds each individual sections intervals to find the total time spent on
each one.

B) One difficulty with the SOFIT was that I didnt have the opportunity to perform
more than one SOFIT on each DT member. For those that did, there was
actually a decrease in MVPA for all three teachers who had two SOFITs. I
dont attribute this to being a less quality teach, but due to the nature of the
lessons and the differences. Lessons with high MVPA like Kristens which
couldnt even make the graph because there was too much total time, had a
lot of gameplay where students are in constant motion. The ones with lower
MVPA involved more instruction time and content being taught, such as skill
development. One thing that was interesting was how the 2 nd grade classes

both had the lowest MVPA numbers out of all the other grades. This could be
for a variety of reasons such as the students requiring more instruction time
due to age or lower aerobic capacity. The older the students got, the higher
the MVPA was generally.
C) MVPA is critical to a students experience in their learning experience. They
need to have the opportunity to practice skills and also have time to be active
to reap the health benefits that come with physical education. While high
MVPA is definitely a positive, too much of it can take away from instruction
time and inhibit students from developing good habits. Finding a balance
between MVPA and instruction is vital to a good learning experience.
3) Systematic Observation: Time Analysis
A)

B) I thought the time analysis gave a much more comprehensive look at how
each teacher taught their lessons and what their strengths and weaknesses
were. Before I assess the teachers, I must first say that only two teachers
received more than one time analysis from me this semester and only four of
the six teachers got assessed with this tool total. Based off the info I have, it
is clear that Logan puts a lot of emphasis on activity. His students are in the
2nd grade so he wants to make sure they are kept moving so they dont
succumb to their short attention spans, but he also lacks a large amount of
instruction time which is vital for this age group. Lessening the time spent on
activity could benefit Logans teaching going forward. Thoren had a much
more balanced bar graph which is ideal for this age group. Management is
bound to be higher due to the age of students and need for different tasks
consistently, but there is also a strong amount of instruction to back up the
activity, creating quality MVPA for the students. Zoe spent the most time on
management which could be largely due to behavioral issues. Developing
better rapport with the students as well as more solidified routines at the
beginning of the semester would have helped decrease management time
and increased both activity and instruction. Christian had both more
management and instruction than activity, which would normally be a
problem, but it could also show Christians dedication to delivering these
students with quality content. Making sure students are paying attention and
spending lots of time instructing students can lead to better skill development
and better quality MVPA.

C) This tool is an important measure for students because it encompasses a

variety of aspects of teaching. Finding a balance between the three behaviors

(activity, management, and instruction) is crucial towards enhancing the
student experience. A lot activity can have numerous health benefits, but if it
takes too much time from instruction the quality of the activity could go down.
The higher the management, the less time students spend active and
engaged. But if students dont have time for breaks or new activities then they
often lose interest and forget the instruction they just received or become less
engaged in the activity.
