REFLECTIVE SUMMARY

CAPTION: The following summary captures my thoughts and feelings about undertaking the
PostGraduate Diploma in Education. It would be remiss of me not to mention the wealth of
knowledge Ive gained for the past nine months .I really feel Ive developed significantly as a
teacher

The past nine months have been fun, tiring, challenging but has taught and continue to
teach me about my teaching practice as it relates to the teaching of Principles of Accounts. This
experience has been one where I was afforded the opportunity to sit and listen to lecturers from
some great minds. Most of whom had once walked this part that I am now on. This program has
also exposed me to so many great teachers, some that have been great shoulders of strength to
lean on and those that was there for knowledge and a good old laugh. It is through my lecturers I
have been made aware of the Sociological, Psychological and Philosophical theories of
education and how knowledge in these areas in addition to Language and Health and Family Life
Education (H.F.L.E) significantly impacts my practice as a teacher.
The biggest impact during this journey was that of the many field days. I have learnt new
approaches to teaching the topics from my various group members and these field days have
helped to make my own practice more exciting and engaging. Through the guidance of my
supervisor Mrs. Lystra Stephens James and Mrs. Barras , Ive learnt the significance of
conceptualising a lesson; Ive learnt that it is my responsibility to make learning exciting so that
my students want to learn. From my various lecturers I have learn that students absorb
information in different ways, it is therefore my responsibility to discover the right way to reach
the different learners in my classrooms. I have come to appreciate that the modern student cannot

be taught by simple chalk and talk so I must now incorporate innovative ways through the use
of technology to become a student-centered teacher to strengthen my students learning.
My teaching has improved tremendously from the time I started the Diploma in Education
Programme but I know there is more to learn and will seek avenues to continue improving my
skills. I THANK YOU Mrs. James for the continued support and words of motivation when I felt
like this was too much. You always believed in me and the entire class.
This experience can only be described as life changing. I thus anticipate my career as a teacher to
be a long rewarding one, which will allow me to continue moulding the mind of students who
will go on to become noteworthy citizens of Trinidad and Tobago in years to come.
