From the desk of Mu sic Secretary

The Freshie welcome 23rd August, 2008 held in the hostel saw many fresh inmates participating by way of singing, playing instrwnents like guitar, synthesizer and tabla, poetry recitation, etc. In fact, the freshie welcome was the first hostel event in which some of the talents of the hostel like Anand, Sachin were first known.

On August 22nd Sept.,2008, S.AAZ, the Indian music club of the institute conducted the club orientation programme. HI participated in this programme not only by way of being a part of the audience but we also had Va run Purohit and Irnan Mukherjee present 2 songs (,Teri Deewani' by Kailash Kher and 'Zindagi Maut Na Ban [aye' from Sarfarosh), Iman also played the keyboard and Abhisekh Sankaran accompanied them on the tabla. This is the first time there has been a participation from our hostel in the SAAZ orientation.

by Anup [alota and Abhisekh sang 'Krishna ne Begane' by Colonial Cousins). Iman Mukherjee was on the keyboard. Abhisekh Sankaran also helped organise this event along with Mr. Modok, the music teacher for the NSO students.

On 23rd September, the first music GC event - the Music Trivia Quiz was held. Two teams from our hostel participated in this event, one team consisting of Rohit Kamat and Anand Pratik and the other consisting ofTej Vohra, Saurabh Tiwari and Irnan Mukherjee. Again this is the first time we participated in the music oc

The next event held on October 15th was Surbahaar, the biggest Indian musical night of the autumn semester in which some of institute's finest vocalists and instrumentalists present their talents to a packed Convocation hall by way of performing popular Bollywocd and Band songs. Our hostel had Anand Pratik and U K V Sharma sing one song each in this event (Anand sang 'Mantra' by Euphoria and Sharma sang 'Layee vee na gayi' by Sukhwinder Singh) both

of which were greatly appreciated and applauded by the audience. Abhisekh Sankaran also participated in the event by way of organization and playing percussion.

It was very satisfying to see participation from HI increase in the different music programmes, concerts and workshops held in the campus. The Hindustani Classical Concert by Dr. Ashwini Bhide Deshpande in Hostel 3 on 31st of August organised by SPICMACAY, the Rock Appreciation Workshop conducted by Staccato - the western music club of the institute and the

Jazz concert on September 2nd by the Eli-Yamin Quartet - all of these saw attendance from HI.

The Hostel Talent Hunt conducted in the hostel had lots of inmates participating in it. The judges were two reputed singers of the institute - Srabasti Acharya from H 11 and Suman Saurabh from H 13. It was heartening to see the enthusiastic. participation of the hostel a nd that the event. went

on for about 3 hours stands testimony to this fact. Each participant was encouraged with toffees for participation. Apart from the general competition, competitions were also held genre-wise to encourage talents in specific musical genres like ghazal/Indian classical/western etc. The first position was jointly shared between Samuel Wati (the cultural councilor) and Anand Pratik, The second position was shared between Iman Mukherji and Saurabh Tewari and the third position went to U K V Sharma, Mr. Irfan got the consolation prize . Apart. from prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd posit.ions and consolation prizes,

Then came the Ganeshotsav festival starting September 14 in which we had bhajans and aarti every day. On one particular day, we had a Ihr 15 min long bhajan session in the hostel whe re lots of inmates participated. In fact some more of the hidden talents of the hostel were known through this.

Anjali is the 2nd October cultural programme held in P. G. Saxena auditorium every year in the occasion of Gandhi [ayanti, Again for the first time, HI participated in this event by way of Saurabh Tewari and Abhisekh Sankaran singing a devotional song each (Saurabh sang 'Jag rnein sundar hai jo naarn'

Anubhuti

'Anubhuti' is a medium of putting in words a 'yearful' of experience that we all have gathe red at Hostel-I. It is for this reason that we call it the 'Yearbook ofH-l'.

'Anubhuti' starts off with reports from the desks of the post-holders and council members of Hostel-l for the year 2008- 09. The articles open with the section that offers an insight into different dimensions of lIT. 'Anubhuti' later moves on towards the issues and experiences relevant to Hostel 1.

I t is only obvious that we have a

section dedicated to technical articles considering the [act that Hostel 1 houses the Research Scholars and Post-Graduate students ofthe Institute, Later, we have articles that offer contrasting views on topics like 'Slum dog millionaire' and the reservation issue. There are articles and poems like the ones by Prathab K. that add to the value of the yearbook. The articles close with two poems that we are sure the outgoing inmates will remember the hostel by. We dose the yearbook with the profiles of the outgoing inmates.

We hope the reading will be as pleasurable and enlightening for you as the process of putting together the magazine was for us ...

Happy Reading, Anubhuti team .

He is neither an employe~ nor

an Itinerant, or to callium

just another inmate will not do

justice either. He is definitely one among the most familiar faces of

oUI Hostel-I abode. Most of all,

if there is some one inside l-l-I premises, with whom you would

talk without being introduced or without much hesitation, it is he. Yes, I'm talking about our own 'Chandu'! Unquestionable one so close to us yet, so far away from you and me in acute aspects. Virtually, Chandu Joshi has been a resident of H - I for more than twenty odd years. And for that many years and more, we all have literally toiled to meet at this destined place called Hoste-l (H - 1) of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

0"1 o

-'" o o

'"

~

Lets think a loud certain dimensions of an IITian's life and envision how do Chandu - a differently abled person do. For reasons best known to us, Chandu would have been into the same mundane and trivial chores

for as many years he had been here

in H - I. Now, for those of us who see things differently than Chandu does, how many years have we labored to reach this phase of our career? To

me, it seems like an unending cutthroat compet ition and pressures for submissions and Annual Progresses, which has robbed many a days and nights .

.~ = ..c

...Q

= = <C

to be here, in whatever condition he is?

Well, talking about Chandu's differently abled condition, how advantageous are IITian placed as compared to Chandu? Don't an IITian many a times; unconsciously feel so inadequate about themselves (physically, emotionally, verbally, intellectually)? Does s/he not wallow and yearn for things he does not possess! This feeling then, is it any better than being handicapped?

place to live in for fellow inmates? We have seen Chandu shooing off cows and dogs with an intention to safeguard the plants or probably just to keep the premises more neatly or just in obedience he does it. Chandu switches on the corridor lights and is almost eve ry time available for others. Probably not always with the intention to get anything back from the authority, Chandu does these chores.

Let's have a perspective from Chadu's parents and an IITian parents. All parents have dreams for their children to grow up and live

a successful and happy life. But for Chandu's parents, accepting the truth about Chandu condition would have ended the dream. Thus, despaired parents are what. we think Chandu's parents would be. Nevertheless,

do IITian parents keep away from worrying about their TITian child? With the recent financial recession and job insecurities, probably, an IITian parent would be more worried for his child than Chandu's parent does for Chandu,

Now, what might be in Chandu's mind, when he sees us? I failed and probably we might all fail to gain any perspective. Then again, one thing would presumably boggle his mind. In what is it that we spent and invest oUI time, day in and day out. How productive a:re we and are we doing tile things that really matters in life?

Do we have sometime for a friend in need, or the eternity not enough for your pursuit?

Take yourself as an Hvl inmate for instance; what contributions have you made to make Hv l a better

Above all these contemplations, the imperative here would be to ask, what do Chadu has, which an IITian does not have and the vice- versa. If we are to call it a day, who will die a more satisfied person? A very difficult call

it will be.

I guess, other than just our selfish career we have ample things to consider, and it could probably start from looking for the stranger next to us, who is in need.

On the contrary, if at all there's a mark that differentiate between Chandu and an l l'Tian that would be just 'Hope'. Hope that could keep an Il'Tian's dream alive, unlike the other counterpart, hope that our parents and the society banks on. And definitely, hope is what will throw light to see Chandu as an Eternal Guest or a Supernumerary Visitor to you?

On Vegetarianism

Dhaval Bonde

that I had studied long back! Let's analyze this further.

Hallmark Of Intelligence

The debate on vegetarian and nonvegetarian is always on. So what really signifies a vegetarian lUs ually vegetarianism is discussed in the context offood. Some people argue that egg is vegetarian and some say it's all part of the food chain. Some questions that plants are also living things and there are bacteria present in om food. And few

do a symm etric a I thinking, saying' that even milk is not vegetarian as the cow transforms its blood to milk.

Human memory is associative. Anything that we remember is stored as an association with some concept already discovered by us. Isn't it true? Say, you want to set your email account password. Why do

you choose the name of your child

or spouse? Or some known concept? It is because you associate the password with these concepts. And most of us subconsciously choose the concepts which are strong enough to remember.

Digging into the literature and on the evolution of vegetarianism, it can be found that vegetarianism is evolved as

an Indian philosophy based purely on the principle of Ahimsa (non-injury). Thus, vegetarianism becomes not a

mere dietetic principle but a moral of thoughts. Absence of jealousy is the real test of Ahimsa. Abstinence from eating meat, fish or any other animal products does not make any sense if you are thinking to cause injury to others by thoughts and being jealous of others. Even the cow does not eat meat nor does the sheep; can it be superior to human? So who is the true vegetarian? It's he/she who is jealous of none and not causing injury to others (including animals) by thoughts and thereby setting him/herself on the path of Ahimsa .. Eating animal products and even if you sleep everyday on the flesh doesn't COW1ts much, if you are not jealous of others. Nevertheless, you are what you eat!

It is like this: If you want to remember a concept A, you associate it with a concept B. And the strength of your memory of A depends on

the strength of your memory ofB. If memory of B is weak, so would be the memoryofA.

This is why you choose your loved one's name, isn't it? Whose name can you remember easily - that of the clerk in your office or that of your spouse? Isn't it obvious that we LIse the associativity rule everyday in our life?

I just walked in through the door talking over phone to a friend who asked me to meet him in room 212. I quickly thought how to remember it: 212 is a. palindrome number!

Then, in a while, I realized what I had just done. I had associated that room number with all palindrome strings

Why did I not take the property of 212 being divisible by 2 to

b . <' remem er It.

Because it involves calculations! Human mind would rather prefer to associate than to calculate. Looking at the number (I.e. associating it with its image I have formed ill my mind), I can also associate the first '2' with the last one - something I cannot do with the divisibility property.

What happens when you meet someone you have already met?

You associate the pe rson with his pre-made image in your mind. That's why you are in splits when the person changes his appearance suddenly,

say, shaves his mustache or goes

bald. You do not find a 100% match of the image that you have in mind and what you have just seen. In some cases, you may not even recognize the person.

This also explains why you take time to recognize a person at a. distance.

MIT has installed swing doors across all the buildings in the campus in the wake of an analysis done by a group of graduate students on the door usage of a building. Needless to stress, the amount of Electricity spent in cooling a large buildings is huge, and restricting the cold air in the building is a point of concern. The air flows in and out

of the building due to the pressure difference created by the cooling effect of the air-conditioner or due

to the stack pressure. The cold air from the building oozes out and is replaced by hot air

surprisingly, the analysis of the

the students in 2006 reveled very significant results. According to them, the traditional swing doors allowed more than eight times of

air to pass than the revolving doors. On applying the Boston weather conditions to their equations, they found that if everyone uses the revolving doors ofE25 (i.e., only two revolving Doors), MIT would save more than 75,000 Kilowatt-hours of energy-s-and prevent 14.6 tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted in the atrnosphere.i

Is the movie good?

As a film, 'Slurndog' is entertaining and extremely well-made. It is a pathbreaking film for it brought before

the world the talent of an Indian team of film enthusiasts. The attention the film gathered from the Indian media is completely justified for it proved before the world how talented Indians are.

Should the movie be appreciated as much in India? Especially by the Indian media?

The people who say that the movie shows a gruesome picture of India are cynical for they are unable to accept the reality that surrounds them. Religious intolerance and poverty are very much a part of the country. However, the only problem that people seem to be having is the fact that a non-Indian is pointing out a harsh reality to us that we wouldn't want to see ourselves.

Would we have the same (negative) reaction that the people seem to be having now if the movie were said

to be set in a country X and a city Y instead of Murnbai, India? Hence,

is the wrath that the movie has received in India only because an 'outsider' talks ill about the country? Is it similar to domestic violence that goes on unnoticed for years but it is violence from an external entity that upsets people?

Aditya Joshi

The two sides

of Slum dog

'Slumdog millionaire' created waves throughout the world as

it swept nearly all awards at several award ceremonies in the us and the UK. As far as India

is concerned, the movie caught attention for the fact that a considerable portion of the team was of Indian origin and the movie was based in the economic capital of the country - Mumbai. Here we try to present both

the sides of the coin - the two sections that the Indian society seems to be divided in. (Some

opinions expressed here are as a result of a survey conducted by the magazine team through a questionnaire)

As a side-note, one would

like to add that the survey conducted showed that 65% of the respondents believed that a movie like 'Slumdog millionaire' would not play any role in changing the mindset of the society towards its margtnalized sections.

Why nowt

It's never too late. Bollywood has had the image of an industry that keeps churning out trashy films one after the other. If now, BoUywood has begun to be appreciated, there is nothing that one should be upset. about. It's never too late after all!

Is the movie good?

'Slumdog' is a product of a sadistic way of looking at India. The movie does not, in any way, portray the reality of India but only highlights the third-world traits of the country. It

is a 'made-to-order' manipulation of the situation in India, a manipulation that is meant to suit the tastes of

the audience that the movie was supposed to cater to. A simple example here is the prize amounts

in the 'Millionaire' show in the film which are the ones that the American version of the show had

Should the movie be appreciated as much in India? Especially by the

Indian media?

At the end of the day, it's a nonIndian film that portrays Indians in a bad light. There is no way we should be proud of it. If anything, we should be proud of the fact that two Indians won individual Oscars for their work in the film. But nothing more than that.

The Indian media has looked at it as yet another breaking news and merely blown it out of proportion.

Why now?

Is the music of 'Slum dog millionaire' A R Rahman or Guizar's best work? Why now? Why has an Indian team been acknowledged now? This is

the time when the giant production houses of Hollywood are entering into the Indian market. Some of their early movies have not done too well at the box office. Is an award to a film with an Indian connection a way to connect with the Indian audience? To get their affiliation?

One cannot help but relate this to the period when the Indian beauties began to win beauty pageants and this was followed by the entry of international cosmetic brands in the Indian market.

So, is Slumdogs victory 'now' a well-planned business strategy of generating demand before the supply?

Once a man who was in pursuit of enlightenment returned to his village with arduous spiritual training from his guru. He began his simple meditative life surviving on natural vegetation in a small hut. One day

he noticed holes in his clothes which were caused by the rats and also the rats disturbed in his meditation. Baffled, he consulted the villagers for the solution. The villagers suggested him having cat in his house. So he bought a cat. The cat did its duty well, but it started moaning with hunger which disturbed him. Again villagers suggested having cow for the milk

to feed the cat. Now, he spent most

of the time in managing the cat and cow which affected his meditative

life. Now villagers advised him to get married to take care of everything.

So he got married. Then to take care of his wife, he started working to meet the financial needs. After few years, his guru came to his home and surprised to see him in that situation. His Guru asked for the reason and he replied, ''All for the clothes".

others in happiness and plans for the high levels of pleasure in the anxious path. Pain is the tail of the pleasure; we know that but we excuse with the statement that life is boring without any thrill or simply declare that life

is composed of both pain and pleasure.

We all came to this earth to kill the time. Though the purpose of life is not enjoyment, the essence of life is to enJoy.

In the pursuit of pleasure, at the end if we experience pleasure

then the passion arises or if we experience pain then hatred arises. As we mature we balance this aspect.

The effect of painfulness is worrying. People, having experienced the painfulness, worry because of the feeling of happening again. Worrying is distraction for any activity. With contentment, happiness will freely flow, but to have contentment, first we need to stop worrying. For any progress this is the base and it is difficult to have this state.

Hence the 1110ral is, 'Stop worrying for the pain which is not yet come' When the pain comes either experience it or work in advance in an ethical way to avoid/ minimize the pain.

There was a blind man selling fruits on the roadside. He offers discount

to the customers who answers his question. So he asks this question, "Is the day beautiful for you? If yes then please describe it". Most of the people answer that they don't know and some say ye-s but unable to describe it.

One day a woman evinced a positive reply. She said, "It is a beautiful day with the glorious sun shines in the morning breaking my lethargic mind to remind me that I was gifted

with another in this lovely earth.

The energy of the delicious food made this day purposeful for me to contribute for good things as the gratitude for this lovely planet, Uh .... well these roads too replenish the beauty. There are some yellow flowers blooming on a tree and some purple ones, too. U h ... it's just an ordinary day in this city, you know. They have eyes but

still blind. Today my day is beautiful because of you".
