NAEYC Standard 1

Promoting Child Development and Learning


Students prepared in early childhood degree programs are grounded ina child development knowledge base.
They use their understanding of young childrens characteristics and needs and of the multiple interacting
influences on childrens development and learning to create environments that are healthy, respectful,
supportive, and challenging for each child.

When I first entered my practicum site the students were singing the Pete
the Cat Song. The more I talked to them the more I learned that they were
interested in Pete the Cat. I had brought in some new and different versions of
Pete the Cat that the students had been read yet. They also enjoyed these books.
I decided to create a series of lesson plans based on Pete the Cat books. I
created Pete the Cat activity plan worksheets in several different developmental
areas including math, language and literacy, science, and dramatic play.
The artifact I have chosen to include for the NAEYC standard 1 is my Pete
the cat language and Literacy activity plan worksheet. I have also included the
activity feedback evaluation that was completed by my practicum site mentor
teacher. For this language and literacy activity I chose to plan the build a sandwich
activity. The students were given different parts and pieces of possible
sandwiches that they may enjoy. I found out that the children all liked different

types of sandwiches which then created conversation among the children as well as
conversation with me while I was supervising and guiding the activity.
By creating this activity plan worksheet it helped me learn what I could do
differently with my next activity plan worksheet as well as what worked well with
this activity plan worksheet. The activity plan worksheet really prepared me for
the lesson plans I am now creating in my own preschool classroom. Although my
lesson plans arent as detailed as the activity plan worksheets it still gives me the
ideas in my head of the goals, objectives, procedure, transition, preventive and
guidance discipline as well as CARAs kit accommodations. Having experience
completing previous lesson plans and activity plan worksheets gives me more of an
idea of how to carry out and adapt to my current and future lesson plans.
