- Alarming statistics-no interest, not prepared- low test scores
- What can I do about it?

Strategies
- Laboratory Experiments- teachers are facilitators
- Student: Hands-on approach to inquiry based learning
- Labs that promotes critical thinking, problem solving,
- Allows students to take responsibility of their scientific
investigations by posing their own questions
- Real-world connections- Students practice what it means to be a scientist
- Develop a personal connection-find meaning/relevance in work

Strategies
- Discourse
- Active participants in learning
- Teachers ask Specific questions to unlock meaningful understanding
to content
- Technology
- Prezi- gets students excited about learning
- Ipads: conduct research-demonstrate authentic assessments
- Simulations: Computer based- exposes students to phenomenon

Self-Efficacy/Growth Mindset/Grit
- Self-Efficacy- perceived abilities towards academic competence
- Support from: Parents, Teachers, peers, and oneself
- Growth Mindset- embrace challenges, endures obstacles, always
learning, utilizes feedback- setbacks are learning opportunities
- Grit- Willingness to continue, sustain interest to reach long-term
goals

Conclusion
- Where did the fun stop? When did school feel more like work?
- Inspire others- Maintain interest to fill jobs
- Peers: care about maintaining engagement and adequately preparing
students for STEM careers
- Students: Equity in STEM: Want to pursue STEM careers
- Take away: Instill a growth mindset to change the way students think, and
to reach out to students before they lose interest in STEM
