Engage: Describe how

you will:
capture students
interest and
introduce the
writing lesson
activate students
background
knowledge

Grade Level:

Pre K

Date/Time you plan to teach the lesson:

Before reading, I will tell the student that today we will be reading The Three
Little Pigs. I will have puppets of the three little pigs and the wolf which I will use
while reading to engage the student in the reading. I will then ask the student if
she remembers the story.
Say: Can you make predictions about what is going to happen in the story based
on what you already know?
Say: I want you to listen closely because after were finished reading, Im going
to have you retell the story to me by drawing a picture and explaining it.
Then we will read the story together and use the puppets to act out the story at
the same time.

Time

During Writing
Explain: Describe how
you will:
model/explain your
thinking about the
writing (list what
you will say/do)
invite students to
model/explain their
thinking about their
writing

I will have a handout after reading for the student to complete. On this handout
the student will draw a picture of whats happening in the story.
Say: Can you help me retell this story by drawing a picture?
Because the student is in pre k, I will have her draw the picture first.
After the student is finished drawing the picture, I will have her explain to me the
picture she drew by retelling the story.
Say: Can you retell the story of The Three Little Pigs to me by explaining your
drawing?
While the student retells the story to me, I will write down everything she says
because she cant write yet.

Evaluate: Describe
how you will:
encourage students
to assess their
understanding and
abilities
evaluate (formally)
student progress
toward achieving
the educational
objectives

I will observe whether or not the student has listened to the story in order to be able
to correctly retell it.

Time

Closure/Sharing:
Describe how you will:
remind students of
the lesson objective
link the new
learning to future
learning

I will remind the student that you can always use drawing and writing to represent
what is happening in a story.

Time

What could go wrong with this lesson and what will you do about it?
The student may become distracted while Im reading the story. I will draw her attention back to me by using puppets. If
it is the background noise that is distracting, I will have the student complete the activity at a later time. The student
may not remember the story exactly. I will offer support and guidance as she draws her picture and retells the story.

Writing lesson Plan Reflection

When preparing for this lesson plan, I was kind of worried about how I would make a writing lesson plan for a student in pre k. It
turned out that my teacher had some great ideas for me and that really got me thinking. I had to go to her to ask her opinion and she
told me to do a lesson that focused on the student being able to retell the story. They had been working on this in class therefore my
CT thought it would be the perfect opportunity to test what Betsabe knew. I only taught this to my case study student because my
teacher wanted to test the other students individually.
I read the book The Three Little Pigs to my student and in order to keep her attention, I had little puppets for her to carry out the
actions as I read. She was very attentive to what I was reading and by the end she was ready to tell me what had happened. I gave
her the piece of paper and asked her to draw what had happened in the story. She asked me a couple of times how to draw a certain
thing and I assisted her. When she was finished with the drawing she was able to tell me exactly what had happened. She was so
close to getting the lines exactly as what was said in the book which is what surprised me. This is what she said.
The first pig met a man with straw. He wanted to build a house. The wolf came and the little pig said not by the hair of my chinny
chin chin. Then the wolf said Im going to huff and puff and then Ill blow your house down. Then he did and ate the pig. The other
little pig met a man with a load of sticks. He wanted to build a house. Then the wolf said little pig little pig wont you let me in? The
pig said not by the hair of my chinny chinny chin. The wolf said then Ill huff and Ill puff and Ill blow your house in. He did and he
ate him. The last little pig met a man with a load of bricks. Then the wolf came and said little pig little pig wont you let me in? The
pig said not by the hair of my chinny chin chin. The wolf said Ill huff and Ill puff and Ill blow your house down. He couldnt though.
Then the wolf tried to get into the house by coming down the chimney so the pig put a pot of hot water in the fire place. The wolf
landed in the water and the pig cooked him and he ate him.
I definitely liked my lesson a lot. The child was very active in participating and enjoyed retelling a story to me. Next time, instead of
telling the student to draw a picture of the story, I would have her draw a picture of her favorite scene in the story. My case study
student is very smart and can already do kindergarten work however if I would have done this activity with the rest of the class I
wouldnt have seen as much success. Changing it to the favorite scene would have made it easier and wouldnt have taken so much
time.
My CT really inspired this lesson.
