confirmed that a missionary who
traveled to Haiti tested positive for
Zika, making her the first confirmed
case in Oklahoma. Lauren Steverson developed a rash that covered
most of her body, ran a fever and
had a headache. She compared the
symptoms with those that pertain
to the flu. Because Steverson is not
pregnant or planning to have children anytime soon, she was not very
concerned.
Its unlikely that Zika virus, particularly spread by mosquitoes, is going to become a major problem in the
United States, Dr. Robert Welliver,

protections against mosquito-borne
viruses in a news conference Feb. 8.

following Donald Trump in the New Hampshire
primary Feb. 9.

Democratic race in New Hampshire following
Sanders razor-thin loss in the Iowa Caucus
Feb. 1.
Clinton was officially announced the winner
of the Democratic race in the Iowa Caucus after
controversy surrounded the incredibly close results between the two candidates. During final
speeches, Sanders claimed the two were in a
virtual tie.

The Iowa Democratic Party said she barely

made the win and votes were so close that some
divisions were decided by the flip of a coin. Despite the win, Clinton might see a dip in numbers in the future.
Given that [Sanders polled] significantly
higher than Clinton in New Hampshire, it could
be a rough start to the 2016 race for Clinton,
said Professor of Political Science James Davenport. What we dont know is if Sanders will be
able to use the success in Iowa and his victory
in New Hampshire to really make a strong run
for the Democratic nomination.

Blake Griffin suspended 4 games

after a fight

Blake Griffin, forward for the Los

Angeles Clippers, was suspended four
games without pay after punching a
team staff member, according to ESPN.
The team is also docking his pay for
an additional game because he broke
his shooting hand.
A team spokesman said the suspension will begin when Griffin is cleared
to play after a projected four-to-six
week recovery period. The NBA assisted in the investigation of the incident
and the disciplinary methods.

Flint mayor says $55 million needed

to replace lead pipes

The mayor of Flint, Michigan, revealed

Feb. 9 that $55 million will be needed
to remove lead pipes in the city. Flint
has been facing a toxic water crisis
since spring of 2014 after its water
source was changed from Lake Huron
sourcing to the Flint River. Corrosive
water in Flint River caused lead from
aging pipes to contaminate the water,
which has led to extreme levels of lead
in the drinking water. City officials
said $37 million has already been
approved, according to CNN. Michigan
Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to present a budget plan for 2016-2017 to
Legislature.

Remains found in 2000 confirmed

DNA match after 16 years
Oklahoma City Police confirmed that
remains discovered in 2000 belong to
missing teenager Regina Marie Curtis. Curtis was reported as a runaway
in May 2000 and the remains were
discovered in June 2000, although a
positive identification was not made
until January 2016. Curtis family and
others have been critical of authorities for taking so long to identify the
remains, but the Oklahoma Medical
Examiners Office issued a statement
claiming until 2012 the office had no
dedicated personnel to handle these
types of cases. Authorities are still
investigating the circumstances surrounding Curtis death.

Fashion business class now available at RSC

by Kelsey Morgan
Editor-in-Chief
Rose State College is now offering a fashion
class as part of the Adult and Senior Personal
Enrichment programs for those interested in
starting their own fashion line.
Beyond Sewing Fashion 101 is designed to
educate students in the fundamental dynamics of becoming an overall fashion designer.
This course focuses on the business aspects
of designing and selling a fashion line, rather
than traditionally focusing on the artistic side
of fashion. Students will learn how to start their
personal brands and gain recognition.
Ill be teaching [students] how to take ownership of their business name and their logo,
said Krystle Curry, who will instruct the course.
Curry attended the Art Institute of California Hollywood in 2007 before her husband was stationed in Oklahoma. She was pursuing a degree
in fashion. She now wants to use her experience
in fashion as an example for others to follow.
I want people to see the opportunity here.
You dont always have to think out of the box.
You can think inside the box. There are oppor-

tunities in fashion right here that most people

dont even know about, Curry said.
Curry launched her childrens clothing line,
Kolur Me Bold, in Oklahoma. She was featured
in Tulsas Fashion Week in 2015.
There is also a Fashion Week in Oklahoma
City. There is a store called Handle that holds
your items for a week. There are ways to be successful here, Curry said.
Students will also learn how to draw and
sketch their own lines.
When asked what she wants to achieve with
this class, Curry said she just wants to spread
her passion for fashion.
Fashion is everything.
The class is open to students and non-students alike. It will take place on Saturdays from
10 a.m. to noon in the Community Learning
Center and begins Feb. 20.
Those interested in taking this course can
register online at rose.edu. For more information, contact Curry at 733-7395.

double digits after Cruz triumphed over
Trump a week prior. Kasich came in a distant second.
The Iowa Caucus ended with Cruz crusading a 27.7 to Trumps 24.3 percent.
Trump demanded a recount, claiming Cruz
stole the victory when a flier from Cruzs
campaign arose, falsely stating Ben Carson
suspended his campaign and encouraging
his supporters to begin voting for Cruz. However, after the New Hampshire win, Trump
is adamant he will make the world respect
America again.
Marco Rubio fell to last place in New
Hampshire despite doing surprisingly well
in Iowa, almost catching up to Trump. His
final count was 21 percent in Iowa and 10.6
percent in New Hampshire.
[Rubios] campaign apparently had a very
good effort in the closing days of the race in
Iowa, Davenport said of the Iowa Caucus.
Several analysts have noted that of those
who made their decision on who they would
vote for in the last few days before the caucus, more broke for Rubio than any other
Republican candidate.
Both Cruz and Rubio ran conventional
ground campaigns, making appearances at
local restaurants and county meetings. They
spent weeks prior to the caucus conducting
bus tours and made their way around the
state, talking up as many voters as possible.

Since the beginning, Trumps campaign

has been self-funded, letting his brand do
the talking. Trump neglected to do any
ground campaigning and his second place
turnout may have been the consequence
for this decision. He recently began running
television adverts. However, there is no clear
sign that these ads were the fire behind his
campaign success in New Hampshire.
Four Republicans and one Democrat have
already suspended their campaigns due to
weak showings in these two primaries.
We will have a better picture of who the
survivors are by the time the Oklahoma
primary arrives, Davenport said.
Oklahomas primary will be on Super
Tuesday which is March 1.
Davenport will hold a panel discussion
March 1, focusing on the presidential primary in Oklahoma.
Well have several panelists discussing
what has happened up to that point, what
they expect to happen in Oklahoma and other states holding primaries on that date and
what they expect to happen going forward.
This event is open to the public and anyone interested in hearing experts share firsthand knowledge about what they predict the
results of these primaries can attend.

Plans in the works for student union

Rose States President Jeanie Webb announced plans for a student union in her address at the Leadership Creativity Retreat held
Jan. 29 at the Professional Training Center.
This proposal would provide students with a
dedicated lounge
Discussion has begun with the Board and we
are working with potential designs and donors.
Our goal is to serve the students and provide
the highest quality of service possible, said
Tamara Pratt, vice president for Student Affairs
and Marketing.
While RSC has many innovative features for
a community college campus, such as student
housing and a fabrication laboratory, a student
union or student lounge is a conspicuously absent amenity.
Instead, the Hubs Main Dining Room serves
as the center of the colleges social life and
students gather from across campus to not only
eat but also socialize or form study groups.
We have that room in the Humanities Building and you can go across the street to the
library to study, but theres no real place just to

hang out aside from the cafeteria, said Kayla

Schmitt, a business major.
The campus does offer secondary gathering
places in the Office of Student Engagement and
at the Clubhouse located in the Village; however, many students feel uncomfortable using
either as a hangout.
The Clubhouse is too far for me to use practically and, as an older student, I really dont
feel as comfortable setting up with all those
younger kids instead of in a centralized lounge
or student union, liberal studies major Becky
McKenna said.
The college currently has an architectural firm looking at costs associated with
a renovation of the Student Center, but the
research wont be complete for several more
weeks, Director of Operational Efficiency
Richard Andrews said.
The union is the latest development project
made possible by the $22 million bond approved in 2013 by both Midwest City and Del
City for infrastructure updates and improvements.

FAFSA changes and information

Staff Writer
For the many students using financial aid
or scholarships to pay for their educational
needs, this time of year is vital. It is time to
renew the 2016-17 FAFSA applications. For
financial aid, students must have them submitted no later than June 30.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid
is required by schools across the nation, including Rose State, in order to create customized financial packages for each student.
The Department of Education has changed
the protocol to require a Federal Student Aid
ID to complete applications. This allows students and families access to accounts in order
to make appropriate changes. Applicants must
create an ID and password before continuing
the application process.
Important records such as the students and
parents Social Security number, a drivers
license or appropriate substitute and the applicants federal tax information are needed in
order to fill out the application in its entirety.
The Student Eligibility section includes student and parent demographics, school selection and other confirmations that deliberates

eligibility for financial aid. During this process,

consider using the IRS data retrieval tool. If
there is missing tax information, the IRS data
retrieval tool will help access IRS tax information. Tax information is one of the biggest factors in applying for financial aid. If there are
complications filling out the application, there
is a help button located at the right side of the
FAFSA entry page.
According to Time Magazine, filing financial aid applications as early as possible is
beneficial. This will allow time to make edits to
the application if there are any complications
or missing information.
There has been a major change in dates
when its comes to 2017-18 FAFSA application.
Students will be able to submit 2017-18 FAFSA as early as Oct. 1, 2016. This application
will use student and parent tax information
from 2015 instead of 2016.
To apply for student aid, go to fafsa.gov.
For additional help filling out the FAFSA or for
any questions or concerns, visit the Financial
Office, Student Services, Room. 200 or call

Broncos Sack Panthers at Super

Bowl 50
The Denver Broncos won 24-10 over
the Carolina Panthers at Super Bowl
hosted in Santa Clara, California.
Despite winning all but one game this
season, the Panthers found themselves
unable to overcome the Broncos defense and allowed the Broncos to make
three field goals, a defensive goal and a
touchdown. Panthers quarterback and
offensive superstar Cam Newton was
sacked seven times during the game,
tying him for a Super Bowl record for
most sacks. For Broncos quarterback
Peyton Manning, who at 39 is the oldest starting quarterback in Super Bowl
history, the win also marked another
Super Bowl first. Manning is the first
quarterback to win the Super Bowl on
two different teams, having won the
Super Bowl as quarterback for the
Indianapolis Colts at Super Bowl XLI.
Although senior officials at the NFL
indicate that it is likely Manning will
retire after the Super Bowl, he has yet
to confirm his intentions.

Three arrested after Taiwanese

Earthquake shook building to pieces
More than 40 people were killed and
120 remain missing after a high-rise
apartment building collapsed during
the 6.4 earthquake that rocked Taiwan Feb. 6. Three former executives
of the construction company responsible for the building have been
arrested on charges of professional
negligence after it was discovered
that blue cooking oil cans were used
as construction filler for the structures beams. While the building was
completed in 1994 and the use of
fillers such as paint cans or Styrofoam was not outlawed until 1999,
the Taiwanese government has condemned such a practice as unethical
and is conducting an investigation on
the companys associated projects.
Authorities continue to search for the
120 missing individuals, believing
them to be buried in the rubble of
the apartment building.

I personally have no
problem with people
asking for money when
they are in need; however, we need them
to stay safe as well as

believe that this law is

these things.

I want to see restrictions on panhandling,

Isabelle Billen, Associate

any harm. We dont

I think Oklahoma City

on helping them so they
dont need to panhandle
in the first place.

Counseling
services on campus
by Becca Stokes

Online Editor
The Office of Special Services
and Student Outreach offers shortterm counseling and off-campus
referrals to students and faculty
that experience personal problems
and need to address concerns.
Individual counseling can help
find solutions for personal problems, find alternatives, expand
choices and overcome obstacles.
These sessions are meant to give
those who need it a chance to
discuss what is on his or her mind
with an objective person.
Counseling is a service to help
our students have a safe place to
process things going on in their
lives and work toward a better
place, said Joanne Stafford, director of Special Services and Student
Outreach.
The time to work through these
issues could take an entire semester or only part of one. The
sessions typically last an hour per
appointment.
We clear the clutter out of the
path of our clients so they can see
the steps they need to take. Our
role is not make decisions for them
but to help them gain some clarity
of mind, Stafford said.
The variety of issues discussed
include relationship problems,

anxiety, depression, grief, abuse,

indecision, financial issues, family
issues, stress and anger issues.
The counseling services provide
a secure location to discuss any
issues that the person wants to
discuss. All information disclosed
in these sessions is confidential.
On top of the one-on-one sessions, the program also provides
referrals to off-campus resources
for extra help that the person may
need. Several that are recommended by Stafford include the 2-1-1
helpline and the suicide lifeline.
The 2-1-1 call center allows
callers to be matched with critical
health or human services they may
need including shelter, food, health
care, support groups, legal aid and
employment.
We are here for you. Please
give us a call if youre worried

The tampon tax is a tax charged not only on tampons, but also
pads and other feminine hygiene products which varies from state
to state. The fight against the tampon tax is not about an extra or
special tax imposed on these items, but rather advocating against a
feminine tax altogether.
According to WorldBank.org, about 50.4 percent of the United
States population is female. This means that a more than half of the
U.S. population is affected by this tax.
Most states put a tax on all tangible personal property. However,
states exempt certain items that are considered absolutely necessary,
known as non-luxury items. Every state has their own list of these
items, but some common ones that fall under that category include
groceries, medication and agricultural products. Some states even
exempt taxation on clothes.
Only five states out of the 50 have specifically excluded feminine
hygiene products from being taxed. The remaining 45 states consider
these products luxury items and tax them accordingly.
I think it is wrong that only a handful of states exempt these
things. The problem is there isnt enough women in government to
look out for us girls. We need to do something and get involved, said
RSC student Sabrina Wright.
Groundswell.org estimates a woman spends about $120 on tampons and pads each year for about 40 years, or until time of menopause, meaning each woman is spending about $4,800 on average
throughout her lifetime. This does not include other expenses women have, such as painkillers for cramps and replacing clothing and
sheets.
After the issue was brought up on campus, it became apparent
much of the female demographic pay the luxury tax on these items
unknowingly. A few women feel as if they are forced to pay extra for
simply being female.
You can spend money on name brand stuff if you want, but then
go and charge luxury on these, which you cant control. I would like
to see that changed, said RSC student Emily Parkinson.
President Barack Obama has discussed the tampon tax and encouraged all women to spread the word and stand up against the
inequality most women do not know they are subjected to.
Change.org offers a way for women to fight back.
Jennifer Weiss-Wolf and Cosmopolitan Magazine have teamed
together to create a petition directed toward U.S. state legislators to
discontinue the taxation.
To participate, go to Change.org and search U.S. Tampons to sign
the petition.

The luxury items being taxed include feminine hygiene products, disposable heating pads and pregnancy tests.

Kevin Durant Sweeps

As the Oklahoma City Thunders season continues to progress, rumors of Kevin Durant
joining another team continues to
make headlines. As reported by
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, league sources are claiming
the Warriors to be the front-runners in the 2016 Summer Sweepstakes of Durant.
This season, stories with this
rhetoric have been pushed to the
backseat because of the Warriors
historic start to the season.
Durant potentially leaving is
difficult to imagine considering
his laid-back lifestyle, which suits
notably well in Oklahoma City,
but he does not want his window
of opportunity to close. Durant
joining an organization that has
all their pieces in line would be
ideal, which is why the Warriors
are front-runners.
It is evident and has been said
that Durant wants to play with
Russell Westbrook for the entirety
of his career. Westbrook will be a
free agent in the summer of 2017.
With this in mind, Durant could
possibly sign a one-year deal to
play another season in Oklahoma City with Westbrook and they
could then make their decisions
together.
Last week, sports television
personality Stephen A. Smith said
it is a big possibility Westbrook
could follow Durant to the Los
Angeles Lakers when he is a free
agent. Westbrook, alumni of the
University of California, Los Angeles, returning home after Kobe

Bryant retires would send shockwaves. Westbrook is the bright

lights, fashion icon that would
be welcomed to LA and bring
excitement to the city. On the
other hand, the Lakers are overwhelmingly young, but do have
potential. Westbrook and Durant
leaving for LA could possibly set
them further back from winning
an NBA Championship. With
Westbrooks pace of play and athleticism, there is no telling how
long he will be able to do what he
can now, barring a serious injury.
Last week, Blake Griffin made
headlines after an altercation with
a member of the equipment staff.
Griffin has been sidelined for the
last month with an injury, and his
return will be postponed another
month because of the altercation
in which Griffin broke his hand.
According to league sources, the
Clippers are entertaining the idea
of trading Griffin, but plan on
seeing how the season plays out.
With this going on, talk has been
made of a possible trade between
the Thunder and Clippers, resulting in the return of Griffin to
Oklahoma City and the departure
of Durant to a team who is missing one key piece.
The fate of Durant joining any
of these teams will shake up the
entire league. These talks will be
entertained for a few days, but
this will all hedge on where the
Thunder finish this year. If they
can knock off the Warriors and
Cavaliers, Durant will most likely
stay in Oklahoma City.

Editorial: Ways to make a safe

campus a safer and smarter
campus
During faculty orientation for the spring semester, RSC teamed up
with the Midwest City Police Department and SWAT team to deliver a
realistic active shooter demonstration, followed by an informational
presentation. The presentation ended with an open forum for questions and comments directed toward the SWAT team and MWCPD
captain as well as RSCs Safety Specialist. Many theoretical questions
were asked regarding situational responses and appropriate reactions
when in the face of an active shooter on campus. Questions then
arose about RSCs own messaging system.
The RAVE messaging system was adopted by RSC fall of 2015 and
is used to send alerts to students on and off campus regarding closing
the campus due to inclement weather, emergencies, etc.
Mike Templeman, safety and risk management coordinator, explained the benefits of having the messaging system, as well as assured faculty that there are ways to be in communication with everyone if an active shooter situation was to arise on campus.
However, everyone is a term used loosely. This messaging system
allows the school to send out messages, but there is no way to contact
the school if crisis has turned to casualty.
Manipulating the system to connect to a database of student, staff
and faculty names and phone numbers would allow interactive messaging so those on campus can reply back during stressful situations.
Opening up a two-way communication network can be incredibly useful in helping those in trouble in a timely manner, potentially saving
lives.
The idea around this system would be to create and promote temporary contact with students and faculty both on and off campus,
allowing those who could potentially be in danger an ability to reply
via text message their current condition or location which would will
direct emergency officials to exactly where they are needed.

Raider Spotlight: Professor Edition

by Trevor Wilson
Staff Writer

Any advice or
words of wisdom
for other women
pursuing graduate
degrees or
teaching higher
education?

What is the best

part of teaching?

The Oklahoma Women

in Higher Education is
a very supportive and
empowering organization and has provided me with valuable
leadership, networking
and mentoring opportunities. The Debbie
Blanke Scholarship is
an additional benefit
to an already great organization, and I look
forward to seeing how
it continues to impact
the lives of Oklahoma
women in higher
education.

Embrace education
as part of your identity, just as you are
a spouse, partner,
employee, parent,
friend, etc. Determine
and prioritize your life
roles and then develop
and implement a time
management strategy that ensures you
are spending enough
time on all the important areas of your life.
Evaluate often and
change as necessary.

Since receiving the

award, I have changed
positions on campus,
so teaching is no longer my primary role.
I loved being in the
classroom - connecting
with students, helping
them find their path,
seeing them succeed.

What is the very

first thing you are
going to do upon
completing your
doctorate?

Take a little time to

breathe and reflect
then get back to
reading, learning and
studying my field.

How has the Dr.

Debbie Blanke
Scholarship been
of benefit to your
career goals as a
woman in higher
education?

Once a year, the Oklahoma Women in Higher Education selects a single all-star graduate
student to receive the Dr. Debbie Blanke Scholarship. This years winner was Rose States
own Misty Engelbrecht.
Engelbrecht, professor and new director of Rose State Innovation Station, started her
career at Rose State College. She has since gone on to receive her bachelors degree from
UCO, M.B.A from OCU and masters in education from OU. Along with working at Rose
State, she is also a doctoral candidate at OU in pursuit of her Ph.D.

If you present at
the OKWHE
conference, what
will your
presentation/topic
focus on?

How did you first

learn of the Dr.
Debbie Blanke
Scholarship?

In 2010, I attended a
conference session of
women who candidly
shared their experiences as student, spouse,
mother, employee, etc.
I had a 4-month-old
son and was trying to
decide if going back
to school was possible. Obviously, their
presentation resonated
with me and gave me
the courage to take
action and go back to
school. My presentation would be something that encourages,
promotes and inspires
others to take action.

The scholarship was

announced at the
2014 Oklahoma Women in Higher Education
Annual Conference.
When applications
became available, Dr.
Hendrix, vice president
of Academic Affairs
and Dr. Ortiz, the dean
of Social Sciences, sent
emails encouraging me
to apply.
