Introduction
Management skills and leadership quality of employees are major factors behind the success of
an organization. In addition to the efficiency of the top level management, personal leadership
and management development is very critical to the organization success as their productivity is
largely dependent on their individual skills and talents. A personal development plan helps in
honing the skills sets of employees with further studies and accomplishment of personal goals.
This assignment seeks to explain the various process of setting up a PDP (personal development
plan) and its positive impact on productivity of an organization.

1.1 The impact of organizational objectives, values and culture on leadership and
management roles
Leadership and management roles have big roles to play in an organization. Leadership is an
important function and is the act of establishing a vision for a business, communicating and
engaging others in the vision; whereas Management is the activity of co-coordinating and
organizing various economic resources that are required for achieving leadership vision.
An organizations objectives, values and culture deeply influence leadership and management
roles primarily of top leaders and managerial representatives. It is mainly because all of them are
directly linked to operational efficiency and business performance of the organization. The
organizational objectives direct the leadership as to what is to be done and how it is to be done.
Organizational values require leaders and top management personnel to display strong and
focused performance so as to inspire and motivate the sub-ordinates (martinbauer.com 2015).
Organizational objectives are directed towards achievement of vision and mission of a business.
Economic resources of an organization are directed for the achievement of the same. The
management passes down the vision of business to its employees in order to achieve
organizational objectives. Organizational objectives include achievement of profitability,
operational efficiency, improving sales targets, customer service goals, financial milestones, or
any other measurable dimension of the business.

Organizational values define the people practices, product or service qualities of an organization.
They include parameters that are rationally measurable in terms of performance, conduct of
business to name a few. Organizational culture can be compared to invisible glue that binds the
members of an organization together. A strong organizational culture will specify how the
members should behave inside and outside the organization while conducting their businesses
(Adair, 2002). For instant Waitrose is a customer focused company and its culture is truly
defined by providing best shopping experience to its customers. For meeting the objectives, the
company charges higher prices for its products and services but management ensures provision
of best quality for enhancing customer relationship. In order to support this, management recruits
only skilled people and also maintains good supplier with efficient distribution channels
(Waitrose 2015).

1.2 Leadership and management skills required to achieve organizational objectives

Leadership and management skills are integral to the achievement of organizational objectives.
The following skills as a whole form the basic leadership and management skills that any
organization requires to succeed:
1. Customer service: This skills work for establish a good relationship with employees; it is
a major element for any organization to gain competitive advantages over other players in
same industry. Being an extrovert I am an interactive person that I personally think is
required for maintaining good relationship with others.
2. Work assignment and team management: An essential feature of leadership and
management is to align and unify the activities of the employees as a team to achieve
common goals. For example - Apple focuses on making unique products with unique
capabilities which needs expert employees who have a good grip on technology and its
applications (Anon 1999). Though I am good in working on assignments and as a team
but yet I need to further enhance these skills. I lack capabilities to coordinate while
working in a team.
3. Support and motivation: Leaders are looked upon as role models who have direction
and the drive to get things. They must know how to motivate and support the members of
their team by solving conflicts and issues for smooth functioning. As I am interactive and
a patient listener I have capabilities to hear to problems of people. I have taken a few
3

decisions and performed acts of motivating others but yet I am just a fresher in the same
and need to enhance skills accordingly.
4. Quick and efficient decision making: Businesses require managers who can exploit
quick opportunities with prompt use of the organizational resources. Profitability and
operational excellence are dependent on managers who can make quick decision that will
improve the turnover and efficiency of the organization (Baker 2002). I am a confident
person and thus consider that decisions made by me are apt but yet I know effectiveness
comes with experience which I need to gain.
5. Change management and adaptability: the only constant feature in any business is
change. Effective leadership will be to quickly adapt to any unforeseen changes in the
business environment and must be able to make quick comebacks using opportunities the
new change has given. I am a dynamic person and thus very flexible towards change.
6. Encouraging innovation in operations: Innovation makes employees think beyond the
existing methods of producing products and rendering services. They are pushed to
deliver better solutions for everyday problems that can improve the organization culture.
As I believe in change and spend a lot of time in brainstorming to determine out-of-thebox ideas, creativity is my forte.
7. Customer oriented business processes: Products and services are made and designed
with the end user satisfaction. What the customer needs and would love to use forms the
main motto of the company. Hence, the leadership of the company is also focused on
building products that excite the customers (Pedler et al., 2006). I still need to work upon
this parameter.

1.3 Assess personal leadership and management skills

An employees efficiency is largely dependent on the level of his personal mastery. One should
possess sounds knowledge about leadership and management skills and their practical
application in business operations. A personal skills audit about me will reveal the various
shortcomings in my skill set that are required for my business position.

Based on the analysis of my strengths and weaknesses, along with determination of varied goals,
the following are the various skills that I need to develop using a PDP.
Self-management Skills: In order to manage work it is important to first manage one. I have
observed that in many circumstances I tend to deviate from the plan and am unable to frame
goals clearly. Thus my personal development plan will comprise of activities that will help to
overcome the same and thus help me not only manage myself but also my work effectively.
Active Listening: To be an effective communicator I also need to be an active and patient
listener. This will help in collecting more quality information along with understanding
perspective of others.
Communication: Exchanges of information is highly critical in any organization thus for all
associated with the same need to imbibe it. Similarly I have to work upon my communication
skills which include development of my presentation skills and skills exhibited while in
meetings. Meetings are highly productive and thus by being more organized and planned for the
same I will be in a position to contribute constructively. Communication with customers is needs
to be effective. I am an extrovert and have higher interactivity but yet the same needs to be
nourished and nurtured to be able to communicate with them more effectively. In organizations
making presentations are highly important. It requires a lot of preparedness and confidence to
stand out and speak. I need to gain such skills so that I can lead a team or an organization in near
future more effectively and efficiently.
Technical Skills: In modern day era where everything is computerized use of the same is highly
inevitable in a work setting. Almost all the activities are done using computers. Even for
maintaining basic records in todays business technology is used. I have been working with MS
Office but yet not very conversant with the same. I also need to acquire spreadsheet learning that
is MS Excel so that I can make calculations and make entries for my projects. Further the
6

knowledge of basic MS PowerPoint is essential to be able to make attractive and creative

presentations. This will increase work efficiency and minimize wastages of time and other
resources.
Time management: Time is one of the most important resources, thus it is essential to use it
wisely. I need to practice time management skills so that I am able to complete my work before
deadlines. This will help me to review my work and thus work out capable solutions within
specified deadlines. This can be done by adding multiple tasks within my plan. Each activity will
have a specified time limit which will help in enhancing efficiency.
Stress management: If stress is not managed than it hampers a persons capability to work. Thus
I need to imbibe practices that will help me combat stress along with its management thereby
becoming more productive and efficient.

2.1 Assessment of opportunities for development of personal leadership and management

Personal leadership and management skills are mastery of the techniques that one needs to use
for the achievement of personal and organization goals. It is very important and essential for the
overall efficiency in performing business operations. The following skills can be developed by
me through utilization of different opportunities, these are:
Education Opportunities: There is lot of scholarship provided by different organization to their
employees for further studies. They also provide their own management classes such as
Waitrose, Lloyds etc. also provide opportunities for develop the management skills that lead to a
management roles in company (Ahlstrom & Bruton 2009). I will also expose myself to such
educational courses sponsored by my organization.
Training and development opportunities: every company required increase the productivity of
operations, for that they provide training to every fresher and intern and also for existing
employees to improve and learn new skills and knowledge. I will specifically attend all training
and development programs conducted by my organization. Further I will also look for special
training programs conducted by other institutions for my own development.
Personal development: all employees performance monitor by managers, who identify the
improving areas and guide individually to improve them. Managers also help employees to make
7

plan and give feedback on their performance to gain further development. I will develop a
personal development plan using Gantt Charts or self-assessment plans and monitor them closely
to track developments.
Other development and motivational activities: Apart from scheduled practices, I can also
work with different employees in team as there is also an opportunity to learn from other
experiences. In addition to this, management also provides different motivational seminars,
meetings and workshops etc. which I also plan to attend.
All these activities create opportunities for employee to learn new skills and knowledge
(Armstrong, 2009)

2.2 Construction of a personal development plan for developing leadership and

management skills
A plan is necessary for the achievement of any objective business or personal. A personal
development plan can be effectively implemented only if it is properly designed and laid out for
tracking and reviewing progress. While designing a PDP I assessed the current working style so
that improvements can be sought in productive activities and unproductive activities can be
excluded. A PDP is made by me to satisfy all the requirements of SMART goals like described in
the table below:

2.3 Managing personal development plan and management skills

Employees can manage their personal development and management skills with constant selfreview. Honest reviews of progress and shortcoming will lead to better understanding of
corrective actions required. A self-review can be conducted by noting the achievements
accomplished by an employee against the charted objectives for each task. Shortcomings and
failures can be noted and escalated to seniors and mentors seeking suggestions for
improvements. Seeking feedback from seniors is the right approach since it gives proper
direction and control over the activities. Further, the HR manager can also contribute by rating
the performance of the employee during the appraisal process which will lead to better
understanding of areas requiring progress. If needed the manager can himself provide
information or guidance regarding additional plans or programs that will lead to better
productivity of the employee (Bacal 1998).
An employee should take care in preserving the notes and workings of previous PDPs executed
so that a timely comparison can be made to check the progress since the beginning of the plan
until the present date. Active comparison will also lead to better benchmarking with standard
practices followed by peers. This would aid an individual in improving his present scales of
performances since the overall development is being compared on a larger scale than within
individual results (Anderson 2009).

13

3.1Review of the personal development plans against the original objectives

The benefit of a personal development plan can be availed only with its proper implementation.
The plan and the actually outcomes should be evaluated frankly and honestly to know the
positive or negative result of the PDP. The very dynamic nature of personal development requires
constant updating and improvement in order to achieve overall success. A personal development
plan will have an uplift in the way employees work within the organization. Continuous review
of the PDP will identify the under-performed practices and that can replace or update to enhance
employees in term of their management capabilities, result in better time management and drive
better output with an improved working style.
The positive impact on my productivity: The process of personal development includes setting
of goals and promises that are achievable and measurable in real terms. It has been proven that
my productivity has increased significantly after undergoing a personal development plan
thereby gaining more returns to the organization. My knowledge about best practices in
respective field has increased and I am able to infuse new energy into organizational operations.
I am now more aware of my roles and responsibilities and tend to work with new vigor in
achieving organizational goals.
The use of will power to stick to promises and goals: A PDP is difficult to adhere to attain the
desired goals since it require tough planning and scheduling that requires much sacrifices and
hardships. A PDP has helped me to practice punctuality, prioritization and strong will power
which may not have been possible otherwise as it requires undergoing several hardships.

3.2Evaluating the effectiveness of a personal development plan

The effectiveness of a PDP can be seen both on the personal as well as official front of an
employees working. They are molded into new personalities who undertake work responsibilities
more seriously with optimism and sincere efforts. A PDP has a directly proportional impact on
the working style, productivity and effectiveness of an employees working time. They become
more concerned about organizational goals as they are aware that their own career growth is tied
up to the PDP. The additional benefits of a PDP can be listed as below:

13

14

The mutual understanding and coordination between me and managers has improved on
account of proper distinction of roles and responsibilities. This has resulted in

minimization of stress and thus enhanced my concentration level at work.

My alignment among the employees increased which implies that I am in a position to
associate with them more strongly. This has helped me to bond with the team and work in
coalition with others thereby resulting in quality performance both at team and personal

level.
I have been also able to enhance my decision making capabilities as I am now in a
position to take swift decisions. Further these decisions are more logical and rational thus

resulting in effective outcomes.

There is better allocation of task as I assume personal leadership in my own areas of
work. This has helped me to specialize and thus deliver quality outputs with minimum

wastages.
Though enhancement of communication skills now I am in a position to interact more
effectively with organizational customers that has improved organizational working

conditions thereby resulting in augmentation of my morale and goodwill among clients.

With the help of this plan I have been able to nurture my skills of innovation as I was
pushed to my limits in improving existing business processes. Now I am able to work

more smartly with higher efficiency levels and thus boost my self-confidence.
PDP has enhanced the efficiency in time management by me that has in turn brought
about improvements in my overall performance (Ahlstrom & Bruton 2009). Now I am
able to fulfill all my assignments before specified time and thus able to live a stress free
life.

3.3Analyzes for further improvement in PDP

A personal development plan is the best way to improve employee productivity and morale. It
helps in redefining the way work was done and helps in reengineering the business processes of
an organization. PDP is a multi-dimensional activity which cannot be mastered within a short
period of time.
As we know, vision, mission and objectives of businesses adopt some crucial changes with the
time and market scenario. So in that case, I will also be required to learn new skills and develop
new approaches to manage the organizational operations. Apart from that its multiple channels
14

15

imply that each skill such as proper verbal- nonverbal communication, personal conversations,
financial goals, etc. require time and effort to achieve (Adair 2002). In addition to these skills,
some skills have nature to changes and further improvements such as customer services that is
not limited to good communication but also required to manage the different conditions with
difficult customers. It requires continues improvements with the study of samples.
PDP is a never ending process and I wish to continue making such plans in future too. It is
mainly because of the benefits derived from the same, my inclination for taking up such
activities has strengthened. This present PDP focused on gaining basic skills like those related to
communication, stress management, time management but in near future I intend to make PDPs
that will help me focus on particular aspects. This will help in gaining in-depth expertise in a
single area. Further I intend to make use of technology and other tools and techniques like Gantt
Charts as I treat each plan as a project that needs to be achieved. The external environment is
filled with opportunities and threats which are highly dynamic. In order to excel in my profession
I need to continuously improve by considering the changes in external environment. Thus, the
with every new PDP improvement for future will be inculcated to gain sustainability and thus
have an aspiring career.

Conclusion
Based on the briefing for developing a personal leadership and management development plan
the following points have to be implemented for effective results:

The organizational objectives, vision and culture should be communicated to the

employees clearly and precisely,

The goals should be achievable and measureable in relative terms to review progress and

suggest improvements,
PDP requires sincere efforts and strict adherence to deadlines for effective output.

A PDP should be drawn on the basis of the organizational objectives the achievement towards
which the efforts of the employees would be directed to. The PDP should be made considering
the requirements of the organization and the availability of resources. Personal leadership and
management skill development does not have any bounds as they are dynamic in nature and

15

16

continue to change frequently. Hence, it must be ensured that a PDP is enforced on a regular
basis to ensure efficient productivity from the employees.
