1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS 111.4. Grade 2.b.)
Students will be able to learn about volume of 3-dimensional solids.
2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?
Ms. Kavas started to lesson by asking a warm- up questions. She took attendance while students
work on the question. At the end of the class she passed an assigned homework to evaluate
student understanding.
3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Power Point
Smart Board
Clicker
Projector
Computer

4- Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? (lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc.)
Ms. Kavas gave a short lecture to explain the topic. She also had some models of 3- dimensional
solids to show the students. Student played a game which was related with the lesson using
clickers. Ms. Kavas was pretty good for using smart board.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, openended, quiz, feedback etc.) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

She used formative assessment using mini board and clickers to check the students
understanding and used summative assessment by assigning them homework at the end of the
class.
6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)
The lesson seemed most likely teacher centered but sometimes it was student- centered.
7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?
Ms. Kavas was very good at classroom management. She has classroom rules, consequences and
expectations which are hanged on the class wall. The students know them and behave well. She
made some jokes related with the lesson to get students attention. After she gave a short lecture
she always walked around the class to make sure student on their task and help students who did
not understand the question.
8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when offtask. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?
The students who not pay attention spaced out liked they day dreamed. Ms. Kavas called their
name and increased the tone of voice while she was lecturing to get their attention again.
9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)
Ms. Kavas mostly communicated with the students verbally. She used facial expression and body
language especially when there was a disruptive behavior. Also she moved around the class
when she was done with the lecture to communicate with students one by one if necessary.
10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc.)
There were 28 students, 12 of them were boys and rests were girls. They sit individually. The
special education students sit in the front of the class. Most of students were Mexican. All
students participated to lesson since class activities made them to participate it.
11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?
Using of mini board and clickers was very effective way to engage the students. The ineffective
thing can be there was no discussion about anything.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

Using of Clickers and mini board can be useful to review the lesson and practice the
questions for the state test.
Giving stickers also is another strategy that can be used to improve positive
reinforcement for each single student.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

5 point deduction from classroom participation point for each disruptive behavior.
Assigning 5 questions to the student who doesnt behave.
