Learning Experience Plan
Name: Mary Fahey
Lesson Title: Music and Matter
Date: March 15th, 2016
Grade Level: Preschool
Circle one:
ECE
PKSN
Standard(s)/Guideline(s): 1. Domain: Cognition and General Knowledge, Strand: Science Inquiry and Application, Topic: Inquiry, Standard: Make careful
observations.
2. Domain: Approaches Toward Learning, Strand: Creativity, Topic: Innovation and Invention, Standard: Use imagination and creativity to interact with objects and
materials.
Pre-assessment of current knowledge: Before completing this lesson, the students will have already completed a hook lesson about matter. Therefore, they
will have knowledge of what matter is and the differences between solids and liquids. In addition, they will also be aware that solids can change into liquids and
liquids can change into knowledge.
Instructional Objectives (1-2)
One/Two Assessed Instructional
Objective(s): The student will be
able to...
The student will be able to
strike each cylinder with
the metal prong and
observe the different types
of noises being made.
The student will be able to
vocally express to their
peers and teacher what
noises they created and
heard.
One Assessed Developmental
Skill:
The student will be able to
use their imagination to
create music with
different shaped cylinders
and a metal prong.
The student will be able to
observe the different
noises made on their own
as well as by their peers.
Safety Considerations:
The students will be
instructed on how to
appropriately use the

Assessment of Student Learning

Identify Evidence: (What will you collect or record as data
to demonstrate students have met your objective(s) and
skill?)
The students explanations of the different noises
they heard when hitting the metal prong against the
cylinders will act as evidence as to whether or not
the students have met the learning objective of
using their imagination to make music as well as
making observations.
Program Monitoring: (How will you aggregate or compile
your evidence into a class or group view?)
If the evidence shows that the students have met
the learning objectives, this will indicate to the
teacher that she is ready to move on. From here,
since the students will know how to make
observations, the teacher could then have the
students record their observations using things such
as words, pictures, charts, or graphs. For example,
the teacher could ask the students to draw a picture
of the cylinder that made the highest pitch noise.

Learning Experience
Academic Language:
Matter: Anything that occupies space.
Liquids: Having consistency like that of water or oil;
flowing freely but of constant volume.
Procedural steps:
For this lesson, the 18 students will be split into two
groups of 9 with one teacher per group. The teacher
will have a measuring cup with colored water in it as
well as 3 cylinders of the same volume but different
shapes- one square, one circle, and one triangle.
First, the teacher will pour the water from the
measuring cup into the square cylinder and show
each of the students.
The teacher will then pour the water into the circle
cylinder, showing the students that although the
shape of the liquid changed, its amount stays the
same. The teacher will do the same for the triangular
cylinder.
After the students have seen this concept and
understand that the amount of matter does not
change even when its shape does, the teacher will
once again fill the 3 cylinders with the same amount
of liquid.
One student at a time, the teacher will place the three
cylinders in front of each student and hand them a
metal prong (the students will be instructed how to
appropriately use these before the activity). The
students will then be instructed to tap any part of the

metal prongs. They are
only allowed to gently hit
the cylinders with them,
not anything or anyone
else.

cylinders with the prong and listen to the different

noises they hear.
Once each child has done the activity, together as a
group the teacher and the students will discuss the
different types of noises they created and heard. For
example, the students will hear a higher pitched
noise when the hit the top of the cylinder, and a lower
pitch when they hit the bottom.

Authentic Materials: (Describe authentic real life, hands-on

materials.)
The hands-on materials in this lesson include the
different shaped cylinders and a metal prong that the
students will be able to observe and hold on their
own.
The cylinders used in this experiment will be filled
with colored water in order to grasp the students
attention.
Adult Roles:
Each teacher completing this lesson with their group
of students will act as the facilitator. The teacher will
be the one to fill the cylinders with water and
distribute them to each of the students. In addition,
the teacher will make sure that all students take their
turns and use the materials for this lesson
appropriately.

We conducted an experiment similar to this one with preschool aged children at a summer camp that I was a counselor at.

Reflection: (What have you learned about your students? How will this inform future instruction?)
