themovementsoftheearthandmoonandtheirrelationshipwiththesun.However,theyarefamiliarwiththefactthatwe
havedayandnight.Theyhaveseenthesunandmoonseeminglymoveacrossthesky.Theyareawarethatthesunis
earthssourceoflight.

havedayandnightonapostitwiththeirnameonitandstickittotheKWLchart.

Lesson2
Moonphases
InthislessonIwouldhavestudentscreateaconceptmaponeverythingtheyknowaboutthemoon.Thentheywould
observethemoonanduseagraphicorganizertorecordtheirdataoverthecourseofafewweeks.Wewouldthenwatch
avideoonmoonphases(brainpop).Asawholeclasswewouldformacircleonthefloorandeachstudentwouldbe
givenaspecificmoonphaseandwouldtrytocurltheirbodyintothatshape.Studentswouldeachcreateachartofthe
moonphasesusingOreocookies.

InthislessonstudentswouldcreateaKWLchartwithwhattheyknowandwonderabouttheplanetsinoursolarsystem.
Thestudentswouldthenbeshownsomeimagesoftheplanetsanddiscusswhattheyseeandmakepredictionsabout
whatthatplanetislike.Wewouldthendoajigsawactivity:Iwouldwritealistoftheeightplanetsontheboard.The

fairness.Eachplanetgroupwouldthengettogetheranddosomeresearchontheirplanet(internet,librarybooks,journal
article).Theywillbegivengraphicorganizerstohelpguidetheirresearch.Then,eachstudentwouldmakeasmall
posterwithapictureoftheirplanetandafewfactsaboutit.Thegroupswoulddisperseandjoinnewgroupsinwhich
everyoneinthegrouphasadifferentplanetandtheywillshareabouttheirplanets.Wewouldcontinuetheserotations
untileveryonehasachancetolearnaboutallofthedifferentplanets.Finally,wewillcreateaphysicalmodelofoursolar
system.

themovementsoftheearthandmoon.Ihavealsoofferedmultiplesmeansofrepresentationwithvideos(visualand
audio),handmademodels,kinestheticactivities,anddiscussion.InadditiontotheseIwillalsoprovideanactivityforthe
acceleratedstudentstoworkonwhileotherstudentsarestillworkingoncreatingtheirmodels.
AdditionalsupportforstudentJ:IwillfrequentlycheckinwithJtohelphimstayontaskasneeded.Iwillalsoassisthim
inconstructinghismodelifneeded.Iwillalsoofferthissupporttostrugglingstudents.Iwillalsogivethemthe
opportunitytospeakthroughtheirthoughtsbeforewritingthemonthepostitnotes.Myhopeisthatthisverbalizationwill
helpthemtoorganizetheirthoughts.
