Prevention Is Possible!
(Kearney, NE) The S.A.F.E. Center, one of 21 local domestic violence and sexual assault

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. National statistics indicate that 1 in 6
women and 1 in 33 men have been sexually assaulted at least once in their lifetime.
Mayors of local cities will be signing proclamations deeming April as Sexual Assault
Awareness Month in their communities. Many community groups have joined together to
show solidarity in ending sexual assault.
The S.A.F.E. Center also invites the public to Paint the Town Teal. University of Nebraska at
Kearney volunteers from the Big Event painted teal ribbons and posted flyers in business
windows in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month on Saturday April 2 nd. S.A.F.E.
Center staff will be Franklin, Harlan, Kearney, and Phelps counties painting ribbons. This is an
opportunity to show your support in preventing sexual assault. All area businesses are
encouraged to contact the S.A.F.E Center for a ribbon or poster.

program will also be shown free to the public on April 11, 7 p.m. at the World Theatre, 2318

at Kearney is hosting educational activities and a special lecture by the two women featured
in the film The Hunting Ground, at a free, public lecture 7 p.m. April 21in the Ponderosa
Room at the Nebraskan Union.
National Sexual Assault Awareness Month gives an opportunity for all of us to step up and
speak out to share this message with our friends and family and within our communities said
Nikki Gausman, Executive Director of The S.A.F. E. Center. There are many opportunities in
April and all year around to emphasize this point and to raise awareness about sexual assault.
We all have a role in creating safe communities. Each of us can safely intervene to stop
concerning behavior, promote and model healthy relationships, believe survivors, and help
find them support.
