TheWretchedStoneReflection
Myfifteenminutelessonfollowedbyaninteractivereadaloudturnedintoatotalofsixty
minutes.WhichwasokaywithMrs.Savurbecausethestudentswereveryengagedinthe
discoveryofwhatthewretchedstoneis.Theinteractivereadingofthelessonwentwell,with
particularemphasisoncertainpartsofthestorytheywereabletopredictsomeeventsaccurately
butdidnotinferthatthesailorswouldturninto
monkeys.
Thereweremanythingsthatcouldhave
contributedtothelackofunderstandingthatthestone
wasatv.OnethingisontheTBIchartwelistedhow
thesailorsactedbeforethetvandhowtheyacted
duringthetv.Whatwasnotlistedishowtheyacted
afterthetv.Thatcouldhavehelpedthemrealizeby
visuallyseeingthethreedifferentstagesunderthetext
clues.
Anotherthingisthattherewasnotenough
roomonthesmartboardtolistalloftheitemsinthe
backgroundknowledgesideofthechart.Thusthere
weretwopagescontinuouslybeingflippedwhich
madeitmorechallengingforthemtovisuallysee
everythingatthesametime.

Anotherthingthatcouldhavecausedthemtogodownthepathofconfusionisthatone
studentstartedthebackgroundknowledgewithlightbulb.Insteadofshuttingitdownrightaway
Itookanswersfromahandfulofstudentsandthenwentoverwiththemtogetherandexplained
tothemthatitdidntfitthedescriptionof2x2,glowedandwasheavy.Mrs.Savurssuggestion
wastonotwriteitonthesmartboardifitdidnotfitthedescriptionotherwiseyouareallowing
themtoheaddownthewrongpath.Ineedtonexttimebebluntwiththekidsiftheansweris
wrong.
AnotherthingInoticedisthatIalsomadeacommenttothekidsthatcouldhavethrown
themofftask.Thecommentwas:Idonotwanttheinferenceijustwantthebackground
knowledge.ThiswasbecauseIdidnotwantonestudenttosharetheanswersoIinsistedon
themnottellingtheanswer.Thisinturncouldhavescaredthemawayfromsayingtv.Even
whentheanswertvwasbroughtupbyoneofthestudentstherewasalongdebateaboutwhether
thekidwasrightorwrong.Mrs.SavursuggestedthatIcouldhaveeasilyendeditthereby
sayingyesitisrightandthisiswhy.WhatIdidinsteadwasdebateoveritfortwentyminutes
betweengoldandtvbecauseIwantedthekidstorealizeitwithoutmetellingthem.Theseareall
thingsIcouldhavedonetocutdownthetime.
Anotherthingthatcouldhavehelpedthemisprovidedthemwithcopiesofthebookof
pagesthatdescribedthewretchedstone.Thiswouldhaveshownthemvisuallyallofthepossible
adjectivesusedtodescribeitinsteadofthefewonthesmartboard.Theycouldhavehighlighted
them,whichinturncouldhavehelpedthemdiscovertheinference.
Mrs.SavurandIdiscussedthatthetimeframeinwhichthebookwaswrittencouldhave
causeddifficultyforthemtounderstand.Tvstodayareverylarge,thin,andarenotasheavy

becauseoftheirdesign.Sotheirbackgroundknowledgeoftvsarenotthesame.Andifthetvis
small2feetby2feetthatcouldbethesizeofasmalltvintheirhouse.Thisiswhyitmightbe
difficultforthemtoenvisionatvinthismanner.Asforustvsusetobeveryheavyandhavea
roundback.
Allinalltherearealotofthingsthatvisuallycouldhavehelpedthemcometothe
conclusionfastersuchasthetextinfrontofthemandthesmartboardonlybeingon1page.
Otherthingscouldhavealsobeenweedingoutunrealisticpossibilitiesrightawaysothatthey
arentevenconsideredonthesmartboard.Anotherthingcouldhavebeentellingthemthetvwas
thecorrectanswerrightaway.Withallofthesemeasuresinplacethelessoncouldhavegonea
lotfasterbuttheconversationwasrichandengaginginthemoment.SoIbelieveitwas
successfulbutcouldhavebeenbetter.
