Reflective Essay

My experience in Honors Political Science was difficult, yet intriguing. Although this
course consisted of a complex agenda, I enjoyed being able to learn about the different problems
and systems that surround the environment in which I live in. I have retained a better
understanding of how politics work in different situations, and familiarized myself with
problems that I did not know existed in Detroit, and in other cities. A specific problem in Detroit
that my group and I worked on all semester was the lack of funding in Detroit Public Schools
and how it affects the overall infrastructure, education, and well-being of the schools, students,
and teachers.
As my group and I delved deeper into this issue, we began to realize that there is a lot of
unknown history behind Detroit Public Schools and its lack of funding. Our problem goes back
as far as 1994, and continues to increase during present day. There are both big and small aspects
that latch on to this problem which proved that this is far more complex than a funding issue.
What really surprised me is the amount of information that was available on the internet
regarding this problem. I never expected to find a plethora of legislations and laws through a
simple google search, which greatly contributed to my research and implementing an effective
solution to this problem. Although this course has ended, I still plan on being aware of the

implications within Detroit Public Schools and hope that a permanent, governmental solution is
implemented.
With respect to working on one particular issue throughout the semester, working within
groups all semester long was another requirement for this course. I really enjoyed having the
option to choose my group members, especially on the basis that we all shared the same concern
for the problems faced by Detroit Public Schools. However, it was extremely complicated to
work along the lines of a set schedule due to everyone being available at different times. Also,
completing a 20-30 page report at different intervals with different sets of information, was also
a complication in terms of organization and forming a linear report that flows as one. The bright
side of working in groups was being able to divide such a large assignment into smaller portions,
resulting in less work per person. My group members positively contributed to research by
providing prior knowledge of the problems with Detroit Public Schools, with new found
information.
The skills that I have obtained while completing this project, and completing this course
can contribute to other aspects of my education in terms of having strong critical thinking skills
and problem-solving skills. I have learned to always look at the other side of problems, and to
avoid adding in biased opinions based on my personal experiences. Also, working in groups has
contributed to better shaping my leadership skills. Being an advocate of change calls for dealing
with those who refute your solution, and this project, and course has prepared me to be able to
deal with such situations.
