Ethical Scenarios

Julia, Kathrine, Brandon, Katelyn

Mr. L catches a bunch of his student high five each

other after they made up some names to describe a
female student, who the other students thought was
unattractive.

Summary of
Ethical
Scenario

He gave the mean students a disapproving look,

however that didnt help stopping the students.
Then one day they kicked the female student in the
back of her knees and tripped her.
But when the female student went to complain to Mr.
L he simply told the student to ignore the other
students.

The students might continue to bully the female

student.
This could lead to serious emotional problems for the
female student.

What possible
issues/concern
s might this
scenario
raise?

The bullying might escalate to violence or harsher

emotional bullying.
This escalation is not good for either the female
student, or the bullies.

The parents could take the issue to the higher

authority of principals or superintendent.
This could lead to the teacher to get into trouble,
which would not be right if the teacher does not have
the proper training.

The parents could teach her how to fight, and then

she could get in trouble for starting a fight.
Teaching the daughter to fight could lead her to believe
the only way to be heard is to fight, which can only end
badly.

How could
this
situation
become a
violation of
the law, the
Code or
other
school/distri
ct policies?

The situation might violate the following codes of

ethics and/ or other school/ district policies:
Principle I: Commitment to the Student
4. Shall make reasonable effort to protect the student
from conditions harmful to learning or to health and
safety.
5. Shall not intentionally expose the student to
embarrassment or disparagement.

School and District

Bullying is against the rules and can interfere with
student learning.
This interference could lead the school to punish the
students.

Teacher:

In this
situation, what
are some
potential
negative
consequences
for the
teacher, for
students, and
the school
community?

If the teacher does not handle the situation properly

they could get in trouble, or even fired.

Students:
We dont know every students home life, there might
be an underlying cause of the bullying.

This could lead to the students getting poorly treated at

home.

Community:
Depending on how far the situation goes, it could
reflect badly and hurt their reputation.

If the case were to be taken to court, it would draw

negative attention to the school.

Depending on how the situation it handled the trust

between the students and the teacher could be lost.
This trust is extremely valuable to the learning
process.

What
responses/actio
ns will result in
a more positive
outcome
and/or what
proactive
measures
might be
considered?

Students:
If confronted the bullies might get a chance to learn how
to control their anger.
The bullies might learn how to be more social and make
friends in more ways.
The bullied student might be able to make more friends
and have more fun at school.

Teacher:
The teacher may gain more respect from the students.
The teacher might be able to turn this around into a
lesson for others.
This could also lead to more training for the teachers.
