Discrimination?

Racial discrimination is a disease that plagued Americas workplace and/or society for over a
century (Officials, 2016). I can relate to this topic a lot because my hometown still witnesses
racial discrimination. The controversy surrounding this issue is the question of does it still
happen and exist, to which the answer is yes. And yes people would agree because the higher
powers will say that it is extinct, but the people know it isnt. For example, a friend applied for a
summer job in a majority white area of Columbia, South Carolina. This was around the time of
the Charleston massacre. Because he was an African American, the employer would not give him
the job he had applied for. Instead, hed gotten a job of lower quality, pay, and status. However,
he came highly qualified and highly recommended by his previous employer, but we later
confirmed that he got the low grade job because he was African American. This issue is
extremely important because its been hindering some from jobs or being successful in life. It
also can keep hardworking people from promotions and other benefits, especially in the
workplace (Law, 2014). Actions have been taken, but havent gotten far because the higher
powers believe that it doesnt happen as often as it used to or it doesnt exist anymore. Contrary
to popular belief, this does not only happen to African Americans, but other minorities as well.
Many may ask how to solve this problem, but there is no real solution. Given Americas past
history and twisted habits and traditions, we will never cure the disease that is racism. For every
non-racist individual, there are a hundred more on the opposite side of the fence. Although total
elimination of racism is non-existent, a step in the right direction is suppression and resistance.
Racism is a virus, and we do not have a specific cure for it, we can meet it with resistance
(Mahoney, 2016). Individuals can start protest groups or an organization to fight this prejudice
act (Stephanie Reid, 2016). However, there is very little that they can do because open racism
has been abolished since the 1950s. However, if there is a certain situation where there is racial
discrimination, then you may take action. Too many individuals in America fall victim to racial
discrimination, which is why this act should not be taken as lightly as its been taken in the past
and present.
The need for racial equality is more crucial now more than ever before because of the high levels
of power that different ethnic groups hold, including whites. This can hinder more and more
people from the one thing they crave most in this world, which is success (Staff, 2009). Also, the
cost of living is becoming higher each day, and racial discrimination can hinder certain
individuals from feeding families or having shelter (Guerrero, 2013). The people who commit
these heinous acts dont realize how deep their decisions go, which is the reason punishment for
this act should be steeper than it presently is.
