Maybe Everything Is Bigger in Texas?
How do you pick someone who perfectly exemplifies such a mass majority of people
who are extremely proud of their state? It almost seems impossible. You really can't, you just try

Comment [1]: This is a statement rather
than a question. So if you want it to be a
question you will need to revise. Or if you
want it to be a statement, then no question
mark.

to pick someone who you think is as proud as the mass majority and hope for the best. Finding a
subject to represent a subculture with many different types of people can be challenging.
Actually finding someone to interview that could represent something as big as the Texan
subculture was quite hard. However, I remembered visiting the Ramirez family this last
Thanksgiving and watching Texas Rising. Katie Ramirez started questioning me about if I had
taken Texas history in high school and what I knew about Texas history. I said Why would I
take Texas history if I didnt go to high school in Texas? She looked back at me appalled. She
thought Texas history was important enough that everyone should know about it. I could sense
that Texas was very important to her and how she was proud of her home state. Katie might get

overlooked here in Texas, but she quickly caught my eye. Her tanned skin, dark brown hair,
average height, proud walk, stance, and attitude stood out as someone who possibly could
represent other proud Texans. Katies enthusiasm and eagerness to interview about her home
state proved her to be a reliable person to represent the Texan subculture.
Tradition has always been a big part of Katies life even when she was little. An annual
family tradition in her family was to have a big family gathering and barbecue. The majority of
her family would come down from all over Texas to her grandmas house to catch up and visit

each other. Texans tend to be more family-oriented and close knit, Katie said, They really
value family time and their close relationships. Tradition also plays a big part in many Texans
lives. Also, barbecue is a big Texas thing. Tradition is very important in Texas culture whether
its societal or family traditions.
Ever since Katie can remember, she has always been interested in the historical aspects
that make up Texas culture. She has always been curious of why Texans are so proud of their
state and what is behind the extremely proud attitude. Katie remembers visiting the San Jacinto
monument and how she thought she could see the proudness of Texas because the tour guide
mentioned that the monument was taller than the Washington monument. Texas is always in a
competition to be the best and the San Jacinto monument proved that. They purposely made the
monument taller than the one in Washington D.C. Katie said while chuckling.
If you are a real Texan, youve at least gone to the rodeo at least one time in your life.

Comment [4]: Good detail and good
observation.

Katie said. Shes been to the rodeo about 3 times and describes it as a true Texan experience. She
said everything is cowboys, country music, and almost everything that can be fried is fried.
She remembers diving into the full experience of the rodeo and even dressing up for the
occasion. She wore cowboy boots and hat, a vest, and blue jeans. Katie thinks if you want to get
a full sense of the Texan culture then the rodeo is the way to go.
Through the interview and gathering together this profile, I really learned so much about
what is included in Texas culture and traditions. However, Im sure everyone has heard the
phrase everything's bigger in Texas so I had obviously had to get Katies opinion:
Yes, I think definitely everything's bigger in Texas. The monument was in competition
to be bigger. The meal sizes, dance halls, religion, country anything, the state itself, trucks, proud
attitudes, and the accents are huge in Texas. Football games and pageants are taken very

seriously here and are a huge part of Texas culture. Also, the cities such as Houston, Dallas, and
Austin are continuing to grow bigger and bigger. Katie said proudly. I could see the excitement
in Katie when she talked about the certain aspects that make her home state unique.
Katie perfectly described what it means to be a Texan and what is included in the Texan
culture for her personally. She showed how Texas has played a big part in her life and continues
to. Katie taught me what it means to be a Texan and now I view Texas as a whole and Texans
differently now. I feel I got a guide on how to be a Texan from a true Texan. Being a new Texan,
I hope I learn more about Texas and the culture as I become closer friends with Katie. I also hope
I can learn more about the Texas ideologies and traditions. Katie has inspired me to want to learn
more about Texas, really embrace the Texas culture that I was kind of thrown into, and to benefit
from everything really being bigger in Texas.

Comment [5]: I think we need to hear
more about your background and how you
found yourself in Texas. Ultimately, the
essay needs to make a point. That will
also help you get to the 3 page min.

Comment [6]: You will need to include
interview details on a WC page.
