Introduction: First I purchased a standard size skittles bag (2.17oz).

When I first saw

how many skittles there are in one of those small bags I was shocked. I separated
out each color of skittle and how many there were. The second step is to create a
pie chart and a pareto chart comparing the ratio between colors and quantity.

Pareto

There are 64 candies in my personal bag of skittles. I expected the red skittles to be
a part of the majority, but what I did not expect is the green skittles to be so high.
Doing the class totals and comparing them side by side in two well descript charts
show that the Green and the Orange skittles lead the way in most found per
bag.

This box plot shows a lot on how this is a

skewed sample. My personal bag of
skittles happened to be the maximum
recorded for and it is considered an
outlier. This reminded me of the whole if
bill gates moving into a standard
neighborhood, and not being accounted
for. There were 27 bags of skittles
accounted for and mine happened to be
the most content of skittles in it.
Reflection: Based on my observations the categorical chart for the histogram did not
make sense but the pie chart did. Box plot made sense for qualitative on a personal
bag and the pareto chart made more sense.
Confidence Interval Estimates
Explain in general the purpose and meaning of a confidence interval: To estimate
the true value of a population proportion.
Construct a 99% confidence interval estimate for the true proportion of yellow
candies: 2.779
Construct a 95% confidence interval estimate for the true mean number of candies
per bag: 60.5
Construct a 98% confidence interval estimate for the standard deviation of the
number of
candies per bag: 3.45

Hypothesis Tests Explain in general the purpose and meaning of a hypothesis test:
To test a claim or statement about a property of a population.

Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that 20% of all Skittles candies are
red: Do Not Reject, Sufficient evidence that there are indeed 20% of all candies are
Red.
Ho: P=.20

H1: P=/.20

P^=.194

q^=0.806

n=1634

Test Statistic:0.606
C .V. = +-1.96

Use a 0.01 significance level to test the claim that the mean number of candies in a
bag of
Skittles is 55: Reject this claim because there is not enough evidence to prove that
the mean is equal to 55.
Ho: u=55

H1: u=/55

Test Statistic:11.432
C.V.= 2.779

x=60.5

n=27 s=2.5

Everything needed for a conditional study was fully met by the skittles project.
There was a couple of tough corners due to the large variety of categories but it was
good. Statistica can always be redifened and broken down to be better.

Reflective paper

Statistics didnt make very much sense to me at the beginning of the year and throughout
the semester. This project has given me an actual role to play in statistics and it was very eye
opening. I had a couple thoughts of doing this project on other categories outside of skittles
while I was doing this. Also my problem solving skills has increased drastically after doing this
project. I did have a great teacher to fall back on if I were to get stuck at points but I wanted to
do this project all on my own with my notes from class, the book, and my formulas sheet.
Before this skittles project I didnt know math really existed. I mean baseball stats,
adding change up and stuff like that was for the common man, but I now feel like I could use this
way of math over anything I would like to get information on for decision making.
What I learned from this project is that my favorite skittle only accounts for twenty
percent of the average bag which out of five different kinds is pretty spot on in distribution. I also
learned that the standard deviation means so much to finding the majority of statistic problems.

Also I learned that this project helped me understand all key concepts of statistics that we have
gone over all semester long and it has shown to increase my knowledge in math, so in the future
if I ever need to know statistics I will remember more instead of my past experiences in algebra I
did not remember a single thing and I also questioned everything. For example when am I ever
going to us this? Well in this class I truly believe I will use this math in my future.
Just the other day my buddy and I were talking about math and how majority of math
classes one does not use the rest of their lives and I told him after taking this class, I will most
likely use this math. This made math a lot more fun.
