EXTINCT SPECIES IN THE WORLD

Chinese river dolphin (baiji)

One of the most recently extinct species. This variety of dolphins migrated from
the Pacific Ocean to the Yangtze River about 20 million years ago. In times of the
Han Dynasty "Erya" were about 5000 specimens in the river.

In 1979 China declared endangered, and in 1983 hunting decree was illegal. By
1986 the total population is estimated about 300 individuals, and in 1990 about
200. Their number continued to fall rapidly, especially with the construction of
the Three Gorges Dam, which irretrievably altered the habitat of this dolphin. In
1998 alone they were able to find 7 copies, and scientists speculated to save
them by moving them to a nearby lake and then take them to the river again
when their chances of survival were greater. But an expedition that crossed the
river from end to end in 2006 could not find even one of these dolphins, so they
are considered officially extinct.
