1. The introduction include just a few of the many ideas for soundscapes to get
you thinking creatively. Now it is your turn. Brainstorm a minimum of three
soundscape ideas in different content areas. You should treat this activity as if
you are the teacher. You are creating a project you would have your students
do. The soundscape you create will be an example which you can use in your
future pedagogy.
Content Area:
Science: Earth Systems
Science
Mathematics: Data,
Analysis, Statistics, and
Probability
Social Studies: History
Soundscape Idea:
Create a soundscape of a tornado, what it would sound like,
weather alerts that would go out, news broadcasts of the
aftermath, etc.
Create a soundscape of students learning about probability by
rolling dice, flipping coins, pushing keys on a calculator, asking
questions, writing down answers, etc.
Create a soundscape of a historical event that was impactful on
United States history with sound effects of people speaking,
background noises of a noisy city or sirens, etc.
Create a soundscape of someone using an old-timey feather and
ink to write on paper and tapping the excess ink off on the side of
the jar, and in the background have a reading of some sort poetry
reading of what he/she is writing.
2. Choose the idea you like the most. Write a brief summary of your idea.
For this soundscape, I want to choose the idea of Social Studies and specifically History. One
event that I think shaped United States history that I feel would be impactful for not only me but
lots of others that were alive during the time is the September 11 th Attacks in 2001. I can
remember when this happened when I was in school and it was something very scary for me and
through the course of history of things that have occurred during my lifetime it was pretty
memorable to me. The sounds and the things that I heard on the news as well as some of the
phone calls made during the attacks was something I will never forget and thats why I think this
would be a good soundscape for me to create. For the soundscape for this idea I would like to
include things such as busy city traffic noises, phone calls to people or 911, sirens, loud airplane
noises or explosion noises, etc. I would use this soundscape when teaching children about recent
U.S. history that has taken place since the year 2000 that really shaped our country, and I would
use this when talking about the September 11 th Attacks specifically.
3. Identify the grade level, content area, and standards.
Grade level:
3rd Grade
Content area(s):
Social Studies: History
Standards:
Standard 1.2.d: Describe the history,
4. Brainstorm what sounds you feel should be included in this soundscape. (A bit
of a project outline)
I recently saw a video a friend of my posted on Facebook that is resurfacing of a girl watching the
world trade center collapse from her dorm room and filming it, and that is what gave me the idea
to do this soundscape. Her and her friends sounded so worried and there was lots of screaming
and alarms and it was a very scary event but I thought it may make for a good soundscape. The
entire time I was watching this video my heart was just pounding for them, so that is something
that I want to be sure to include in this, and I want it to be a reoccurring heartbeat to stress the
fear of the event to the listener. Some of the sounds that I think should be included in this
soundscape are things such as:
