A shaft subjected to pure torsion yields at a torque of 1.2 KN-m. A similar shaft is,
subjected to a torque of 720 N-m and a bending moment M. Determine the
maximum allowable value of M according to (2) maximum shear stress theory,
(b) shear strain energy theory.
A thin walled cylindrical tank has a diameter of 2 m. If it is subjected
to an intemal pressure of 1 MN/m*, calculate the required wall
thickness for the tank if yielding is not t occur. The von Mises
theory should be used to check for yielding. The yield stress in
simple tension for the material is 280 MN/m* and a factor’of safety
of 1.5 should be used. a -
In the pulley system shown in Fig. 1824, the pulleys cause an additional load of
SOON each. Calculate a suitable shaft diameter 50 as to avoid failure by the
‘maximum shear stress criterion. The tensile yield strength of the shaft material is
248 MN/m*. The shaft weight may be neglected and the shaft bearings may be
treated as simple supports.
A shaft projects through a roller bearing from where it may be assumed to be
cantilevered. It is 50 mm diameter for a length of 100 mm and then is stepped
down to 25 mm diameter for a further 100mm to the free end. At this point a
load of 2.68 KN is applied. If the limiting design bending stress is 280 MN/m*
determine a suitable value for the fillet radius at the change of section. What is
the safety factor at the bearing housing? (See Fig.12*7. for relevant data.)
