Advanced Exercise Physiology

Advanced study of the functioning of physiological systems and

underlying mechanisms during exercise. This course will also cover the
acute and chronic physiological adaptations of training and detraining as
well as factors that affect performance to include metabolism,
neuroendocrinology, gender, age, and environment, with an emphasis on
the role of exercise in rehabilitation.

Laboratory Techniques in Advanced Exercise Physiology

Provides students with hands-on experience with techniques and
research applications for measuring, assessing, and evaluating
physiological parameters.
Advanced Exercise Testing and Prescription
An integrative lecture/lab course designed to provide a comprehensive
review of the normal and abnormal physiological responses of the human
body to exercise testing and training in apparently healthy individual
across the lifespan as well as the theoretical and practical knowledge
necessary to conduct and interpret a wide variety of screenings and
exercise tests commonly used in clinical practice. Additionally, students
will be able to design, based on test results, appropriate exercise
prescriptions for apparently healthy adults, as well as clients with special
considerations. This course will emphasize a case-study approach
Electrocardiography
This course includes a concise summary of cardiac electrophysiology,
anatomy, function and neurophysiology. Identification and interpretation of
normal and abnormal resting and exercise electrocardiograms (ECG) will
be performed. Effects of various cardiac medications on resting and
exercise ECG will be discussed. The course involves lecture and intensive
investigation of documented ECG-GXT case studies. In addition, students
will be exposed to the administration and interpretation of the clinical
graded exercise test.
Concepts in Functional Rehabilitation
This lab-based course is designed to provide advanced practical
knowledge and skills that relate to the rehabilitation and reconditioning to
restore optimal musculoskeletal function in individuals both in health and
disease to include testing for return to work. This course will also cover
the physiological mechanisms associated with musculoskeletal injury and
disorders, emphasizing a review of current literature and research.
Pathology
This course is focused on the alterations in cell, tissue and system
mechanisms that manifest as health problems throughout the life span
and prevent or limit individuals from making adaptive wellness responses.
Although core knowledge will be briefly reviewed, the emphasis will be on
application of the material.

Exercise in the Prevention and Rehabilitation of Chronic Diseases and

Disabilities
This advanced course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview
of common disease pathophysiology, disease management,
recommendations for exercise testing and applicable assessment
techniques used in a clinical setting, and effects of exercise training,
emphasizing the role of exercise in both prevention and rehabilitation.
This course will emphasize a case-study approach in creating evidencebased individualized exercise programs for various special populations
related to age, lifestyle, medical condition, and fitness level.
Planning and Implementation of Health Education Programs
As such, this course has been designed to enable the student to organize
and administer a comprehensive health program which includes using a
needs assessment effectively, build a quality curriculum, deliver cutting
edge health instruction, and provide real live health assessment, both in
preparation, delivery and evaluation of units or entire programs.
Advanced Sport Nutrition Assessment and Prescription

This course will provide the strength and conditioning student with the
knowledge to assess and design nutritional strategies for a variety of team
and individualized sports. This will include the use of supplemental
nutrition. The overall focus is to give the future strength and conditioning
coach the ability to optimize training programs through nutrition centered
on periodization training programs both linear and undulating.

Clinical Practice in Exercise Physiology

Knowledge and skills required in clinical settings including an
understanding operational standards and guidelines, practical knowledge
to competently perform and supervise diagnostic/nondiagnostic and
prognostic exercise testing, understanding of evidence-based research
and clinical recommendations for developing and implementing
preventative and rehabilitative services, and the legal and social issues
and implications related to practice as a clinical exercise physiologist.
Entrepreneurism in Health and Fitness
This course is in transition, from the old curriculum to the proposed new
curriculum. Based on student feedback and input, this course will now
provide students with basic business, advocacy and entrepreneurial skills
to innovate the health and fitness field. This course will be taught in a
seminar format to help facilitate professional teaming and collaboration
skills.
Practicum
This course provides students with an opportunity to develop practicebased, hands-on skills to include the assessment, interpretation, and
clinical meaning of a variety of screenings and exercise tests commonly
used in clinical practice under the direct supervision of a certified/licensed

health professional. Students will also develop experience with current

best practices and standards of care in the treatment and management of
chronic diseases and disabilities. Satisfactory completion ("S" grade) of at
least 900 clinical hours is required.
