Candy Sample:
Introduction:
This project aims to show on average how many pieces of candy are in an individual bag
of 2.17 ounce bag of Skittles, as well as how many pieces of each color. The sample size will
consist of twenty-six total bags of Skittles, one from each student in the class. The project will
start off by acquiring the Skittles. After that has been done we will move into making the
individual charts displaying the total in each bag, the total of each color, and the total amount
between the whole sample. The first graphs will be a Pie Chart, Pareto Chart, Histogram and a
Box Plot.

Reflection:
For this section we have been working with two types of data; the first
is categorical data, also known as qualitative data. Categorical data is a type
of data that uses labels to gather the data, such as the types of colors in
each bag of Skittles. The best types of graphs for categorical data are; bar
graphs, pie charts, and Pareto charts. These charts are used because they
will give an actual side-by-side representation of the data values and how
they are represented.
The next type of data used here is quantitative. Quantitative data is
the actual numbers of the data, much like the amount of bags actually used
in this study. The best types of graphs for quantitative data are: dot plot,
steam plot, polygon charts. These charts are better used here because they
give a visual to the actual amounts of data. By doing this, it becomes easier
to see the distribution of all data values.

Confidence Interval: True Proportion; Purple

Confidence Interval: True Mean; Total

Confidence Interval: Standard Deviation

3.59
=.70
26

The reason we do a confidence interval is to get the best estimation of

a population mean and value. These are done to test a claim. To do this we
take a random sample from all the candy and test to see what the values
are. Here we find that the mean of the purple candy is around twenty
percent. While the variation of the candy is around 3.59. By taking the
variance of 3.59, we the divide by the square root of the sample size, in this
case 26 total bags. That equation gives us an interval of .70.

Hypothesis Theory: Significance Level

Hypothesis Theory: Mean Number

The hypothesis is used to test the data, as well as specific theories

about certain events. In this case we are testing to see how many green
candies are in a bag. The theory holds true at around 20% in each bag.
Reflection:
This project has shown that by using certain statistical procedures we
can figure out the amount of total candy per bag. Also we can figure out how
many of each colored candy is in each bag, as well as the overall amount for
the entire population of all candy. This is a class that will have long lasting
effects on my college career as well as my post college life. Psychology is a
field that uses stats to represent society quite often, so knowing how to
break down and interpret data is especially important. The project also
showed me the importance of research and looking things up. But it also
showed me how to follow step-by-step instructions. I have already known the
real world applications of math and its importance to such.
