Session #1: Leverage and Run Support

Support Terminology:
• Cloud
o Used with Cover 2
o Corner is the primary force
o Run To
1. Corner will Constrict the Run Lane and Squeeze
2. Safety is secondary run support and stacks off the CB 
a. Stack means to fit opposite the CB
b. He makes the Corner right
o Run Away
1. Corner ­­Deep Pursuit
2. Safety—Track the hip of the Ball Carrier

IF the corner can beat the block right away he can and the 
safety will fit outside.  Spilling the ball wide and deep is 
OK

If the Corner takes on the block he must constrict the run 
    S lane and squeeze the ball to the Safety and pursuit.

Pre­snap (starting @ the end of the previous play)
o Check Sticks for down and distance
o Get Defensive Call
 o Communicate call and support to teammates
o Check Formation
o Check Keys

• SKY
o Used to Strong side in cover 3
o SS is primary force
o Run to
1. Safety­­ force the ball back inside
2. Corner—outside contain vs. the wide deep bounce
o Inside Runs—Safety needs will fold vs. these runs
1. Fold mean looking for Cutback or gadget coming back
a. Once ball breaks LOS away pursue hard
o Option—Safety has the pitch
• AIR
o Cover 3 to the NUB TE
o Corner has a 1x7 alignment and 1/3 responsibility
o Run to the LB and DE will spill the ball to the CB
o Run away means deep pursuit
• READ 
o Used in Cover 4 or when the S is in 1/4 responsibilities or the OLB is 
primary force vs. blocking Scheme
o Run To:
1. Versus base or reach blocks 
a. Sam is the Force
b. Safety will fit inside of the Sam
2. Versus the Down block
a. Sam will spill
b. Safety is the force
3. Versus Crack block
a. Corner Replace the Safety
4. BS Safety plays cutback
5. BS LB is free

CB $ Safety fits inside Sam, but is in 
Position to chase a wide bounce

o Sam gets between the TE and the next blocker
o Mike fits outside the Sam and Inside the Safety

  Corner would replace safety versus a crack

o Read support away from the SAM
o DE now fills his roles
