After reading this article and conducting additional research, answer to the
following questions.
What is discovery learning?
A teaching strategy in which students are given a problem situation, for which they find
an answer by making an hypothesis, examining hypothesis, recording and analyzing their
results, and coming with a main point of the problem or lesson. Discovery learning is one
of a powerful instructional approach to guide and motivate learners to explore
information and concept for creating new ideas or creating new models of thinking and
behavior.
How does this form of teaching compare to traditional, teacher-centered
instruction?
Traditional instruction usually focuses how instructor or teacher teach and implement the
lesson. So it is basically teacher centered instruction. In traditional instruction teacher is
the main person to teach or implement lesson with different approaches. However in
discovery instruction student is a main person to drive the lesson and working alone or in
small teams and learning lesson in their own ways and at their own pace. Teacher does
not take a traditional role. Usually teacher is mentor, coach.
What educational theories support the discovery learning model?
Psychologist and cognitive learning theorist Jerome Bruner (1967) first outlined the
principles of discovery learning in a book about how people construct knowledge based
on prior experiences. Bruner believes that students must be activethey must identify
key principles for themselves rather than simply accepting teachers explanations. This
process has been called discovery learning. Other Constructivists include Piaget and
Vygotsky. Vygotsky and his ideas on the Zone of Proximal Development and scaffolding
came to be increasingly influential to Bruner's research (Smith, 2002).Builds on the
concept of stages of development (Piaget).Environment has bigger role in learning

development. Unlike Piaget however, Bruner argued that social factors, particularly
language, were important for cognitive growth.
Constructivist theory. Constructivist theory is the basis for discovery learning. Under
both constructivism and discovery learning, educators subscribe to the idea that
knowledge cannot be transferred from one person to another (Domin 1999, p. 1).
What is the most important thing you discovered about discovery learning?
In my opinion Discovery learning includes active participation. To keep this active
participation promotes motivation. When students are actively participating that improves
their creativity and problem solving skills. That`s why students gain ownership of
learning.
How can you apply this method to your future classroom?
To apply discovery learning in my math class I do project base learning projects for some
of my lesson. Students are with PBL projects work on their own and they make their own
conclusions. As a teacher I`m just guiding them for their projects.

Chapter 5- Using Classroom Technology


1. How does technology enhance the teachers ability to plan instruction?
Use one of the available search engines to explore the web for
technological tools such as lesson planning software, worksheets and
puzzle tools, poster and bulletin board production tools, and time
management tools that will assist you in planning. Share your findings with
your class.
First of all I believe that technology increase the productivity for teachers instructional
plan. Because of that technology gives teachers more flexibility to plan, organize and
implement their instructional with many variety ways. For example kahoot.it is one of
way for teachers to create homework, classwork, and quiz or test to engage students to
learn actively. Moreover in my current math class I`m using mymathlab which enables
students learning more actively. Mymathlab is online math program for students to do
their assignments and explore their learnings on the different type of questions. Students
in this web site learn lesson by their path way. Web tool is just guiding students to how to
work and how to apply their knowledge on specific problem. This tool helps me to
organize my assignments and grading them efficiently.
2. Technology offers tools that can help students learn. To what technology
should students have access? Do you have any educational concerns
about the use of these technologies in schools? If so, what are they? If
not, why not?
In my math class students have access to Chromebooks to do their assignments and
students can create 3D objects to print out through the 3D printer for their geometry class.
Other than that as teacher to interact my math lesson I`m using mimio pads and clickers
to increase students engagement to my lesson. Technology is improving and its increase
the demand of it in all areas. So in educational areas it is inevitable to get way from
technology. My concern about the usage of technology in the math class is, decreasing

students` critical thinking and their problem solving skills. Because students are being
addicted to use technology in everywhere. Such as calculators, it decreases their mental
math skills. Internet world is distracting students with many non-useful resources.
