Components
Content Standard:
Choose ONE standard. Be
sure to write out the entire
standard, not just the number.

Learning Objective:

Anticipatory Set:

Choose ONE objective

that leads toward
mastery of the standard
Must be specific,
measurable, and
realistic.
Must have at least two
parts: learning and
behavior
Sometimes called a
"hook" to grab the
student's attention
Focuses student
attention on the
objective and the
purpose of the lesson
Activates prior
knowledge
Requires ACTIVE
PARTICIPATION from
ALL learners

Teaching-Input:
Using effective and varied
strategies, the teacher
provides information for
students to gain the concept,
strategy, or skill.

Description of Plan
SS.HS.S4C3PO2 Strand 4: Life Science, Concept 3: Interdependence of Organisms
Analyze the relationships among various organisms and their environment,
PO1: Identify the relationships among organisms within populations, communities,
ecosystems, and biomes.
Given a coral reef food web, SWBAT demonstrate their understanding of the coral
ecosystem by making a trophic pyramid.

Bell Work
1. In the coral reefs, what are the primary producers?
2. In a trophic pyramid what goes on the bottom?
3. What goes on the top of a trophic pyramid?
5

A short PowerPoint presentation that discusses the food web in the coral reef. Questions
students need to answer while viewing the video.
8

Model the trophic pyramid by drawing it on the board and having students fill in the
general level names.

Demonstrate and show

examples of what students
are expected to do (how to
solve the problem, answer the
question, do the activity etc.).

Check for
Understanding:

Asking students to put their palms up during the lesson to ensure understanding, or
palms down if they do not understand.
2

Various strategies that

are ongoing throughout
the entire lesson.
Enables teacher to
determine whether ALL
students have "gotten it."

Guided Practice:
An opportunity for each

Teacher will walk around lab tables and coach students with activity as needed. Students
will take a coral food web and create a trophic pyramid. If students complete activity

early, they are to write down as many organisms as they see in the movie Blue Planet:
The Coral Seas.

Closure:

Students will write a 5 minute reflection on what they learned about the coral reef
ecosystem.

Actions or statements
made by teachers AND
students that summarize
lesson objectives.
Essential for helping
students integrate ideas,
make sense out of what
has just been taught,
and to improve their
chances of retention and
transfer.
Must be done BEFORE
Independent Practice

Independent Practice:
AFTER proper closure, it is
important to provide time for
additional practice. It may be
group or individual work in
class or it might be
homework.

Assessment:
The formative and/or
summative assessments that
are aligned with the objective.

21st Century Learning:
Includes technology as well
as the 4 Cs: Critical Thinking,
Creativity, Collaboration, and
Communication.

Students will use what they learned about the coral reef ecosystem, including the food
web and trophic pyramid, and apply it to other ecosystems.

How many levels does your trophic pyramid have?

Did any animals fit into two trophic levels?
What is the purpose of a trophic pyramid?

ELLs provide them with a word bank in English/Spanish (or any other language needed), provide students
with a Spanish/English dictionary
ExEd- Students have a separate worksheet with the video questions and a blank trophic pyramid already on
it, modeling the trophic pyramid (in step 5) is also a help for the ExEd
