Classroom Observation Assignment

Observation Form 1
Observation Date: March 16, 2016

Observation Time: 45 Minute Class Period

Teacher Observed: Mrs. Aycicek

School Observed: Science Academy of Chicago

Subject/Grade Level: Math/Grade 7

Observer: Mustafa A Yazici

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known)
The learning objective was clearly posted on the white board thru I can statement as I can
solve real world problems using expressions and equations.

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

Although bellwork was given, instructional focus did not begin until 5 mins after the bell due to
continual talking/side-bar conversations that occurred during the bellwork activity. Pacing lagged
towards the end of class and as a result, she was not able to wrap up her lesson effectively before
the bell rang. At the end of the lesson, she barely gave her students an opportunity to reflect on
whether they met the goal or not.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?
I applaud her efforts in allowing students the opportunity to physically interact with the
Starboard.
4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? ( lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc)
She did a pretty good job incorporating many opportunities for her students to collaborate with
one another and in all cases, they did so very effectively.
5-How did the teacher assess learning? (informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, openended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods

I havent observed other than at the end of the class rushing to ask/check for understanding.

6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style? (Traditional,
progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc)
The lesson that I observed was very teacher-led versus student centered. It might be due to
introducing new concept to class.
7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?
She used positive reinforcement for off task students or unengaged students by saying I like
your idea, I see Muhammed is working on the question. Good job Muhammed, I liked the
way you explain Mr. Patel

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when offtask. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?
She had many students who followed directions, stayed on task, and modeled appropriate
behaviors and she had a couple of students chatty and she kept telling them no talking then
they stopped talking after a while they started again talking. They were not disrespectful but they
were chatty. It looks like she has established a good relationship with them.
9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)
She tended to hover around the front of the white board for a majority of the observed time.
Although most students were engaged throughout the lesson, students need to be reminded what
appropriate working condition looks and sounds like.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)
The class was very diverse. There were 10 girls and 9 boys in the class. They seem to me at least
5 to 6 different backgrounds of kids were there. Asian students seem to me more attentive and
quiet .

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?
It was initially good to use real-word examples to demonstrate new concepts to engage them
more. She was saying No talking those who continue to talk/disrupt should receive
consequences (which can include a set # of warnings.)

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?
I like the bellwork because once they get the class it seems to me they started working on the
assignment. It makes the transition smooth from beginning to next level of learning process in
the classroom. Teacher did not spend a lot of time to attract their attention to what they were
supposed to be doing.
Secondly, I like her engagement with the interactive white board. They exhibited great matter to
be the one who could do things on the starboard.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?
Since there wasnt that much classroom issues in her class but she was using
praising/recognizing/rewarding these students consistently for those who followed directions and
stayed on task. I think doing so will help improve behavior over time as students start to seek
positive attention vs. the negative attention from teacher.
And also I liked the teachers effort asking her students what do you think. How. Why and
to elaborate on their answers.
