Annas speech, language and literacy was evaluated at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewaters
Center for Communicative Disorders during the Fall semester, 2014. The assessments were
conducted over the course of several individual sessions ranging in length from 30-60 minutes,
utilizing an assortment of assessment procedures.
Speech
The Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation 2 was administered on September 17, 2014 in order to
gain information regarding Annas ability to produce speech sounds in the context of single words.
Her performance on this measure earned a standard score of 117 (X=100; sd=15) and a percentile
rank of 87 when compared to other children her same age. The following errors were noted:
Substitution:
-In the initial position of words: s/voiceless th (as in thumb), b/v (as in vacuum)
-In the medial position of words: f/voiceless th (as in bathtub)
-In the final position of words: f/voiceless th (as in bath)
Consonant cluster reduction was also noted: d-/dr (as in drum)
Language
The Preschool Language Scale 5th edition (PLS-5) was administered on September 22, 2014, to
gain information regarding Annas receptive and expressive language skills. Annas performance on
this measure earned the following scores:

Auditory Comprehension
Expressive Communication

Annas performance on both the Auditory Comprehension and Expressive Communication subtests,
as well as the Total Test, was at least within normal limits when compared to her same-aged peers.
Receptively, Anna demonstrated the ability to: understand modified nouns (e.g., Show me the small
black dog.); and order pictures by qualitative concept (e.g., biggest, smallest); and recall story detail,

and make an inference and a prediction about a story that had been read to her (i.e., What color is
Buddys blanket?, How do you think Buddy feels about his new home?, What do you think Buddy
will do the next time it rains?).
Expressively, Anna demonstrated the ability to: formulate meaningful, grammatically correct
questions in response to picture stimuli (e.g., Christopher wants the cereal. What should he ask his
mother?); use modifying noun phrases (e.g., Here are two cars. Tell me which car to point to.);
respond to why questions by giving a reason (e.g., Why do we go to sleep?); repair semantic
absurdities; and think of a word that rhymes with an orally presented word (e.g., hat, cat, bat).
Emergent & Early Literacy
On September 17, 2014, an assortment of non-standardized measures was utilized to survey Annas
emergent literacy skills.
Anna included the following information when retelling a story that had been read to her: the
introduction, the main character, the main goal of the story, the main events, and a conclusion. She
told the story in proper sequence and demonstrated appropriate facility with language and active
involvement in the story. In addition, Anna demonstrated awareness of the following aspects of a
book: capital and lower case letters, one letter, two letters, one word, the last letter of a word, and the
title of the book. She was also able to tell a story when shown a series of wordless pictures. Anna
demonstrated the ability to discriminate word pairs read aloud to her (e.g., Fair, far. Are they the
same or different?); and an emerging ability to identify rhyming words (e.g., Bee, see. Do they
rhyme?). Finally, Anna was able to write the first letter (A) of her name when asked.
Recommendations
Based on the results of this assessments, Anna appears to have age-appropriate speech and
language skills. No further testing or intervention is recommended at this time.
We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with Anna. If you have any questions or would like
additional information regarding her performance or the services available through the University of
Wisconsin Whitewater Center for Communicative Disorders, please feel free to call Beth Miller
Swanson, M.A., CCC-SLP at 262-472-5204.
