WE ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!

Demonstrating Exemplary Behavior

Heather M. Morehouse #9

WE ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!

Problem Behavior: Demonstrating a lack of manners during class such as:
Yelling at each other: Disrupts learning
Not helping each other out- off tasks, waste valuable learning time and not being prepared for class/classroom not kept
in order
Not raising your hand- wastes times in getting through lessons/disruptive/important information is missed
Using tasteless vocabulary to address peers- causes verbal fighting and can hurt feelings, defiance to teacher and rules.
This behavior interferes with learning due to it causes the teacher to stop and correct students, fighting among students and
engaging in activities outside of classroom rules.
Expected Behavior: Students will use proper names and manners when interacting with each other during classroom
participation and group work. Students will model behavior to each other during group work and be self-motivated to model
behavior individually.
WE ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!

Use Your Manners-Say Thank You/Youre Welcome/Address Your Peers with Their Proper Name

Use Your Classroom Voices- Be Calm, Be Heard/Use Kind Words

Be Courteous- Raise your hand/Wait your turn

Be Helpful-Hold Doors for Each other/Help Each Other to Clean Up

Positive Reinforcements:
1. Immediate R+: Students who follow will receive one cotton ball, a star or piece of paper representing the
earth/moon/sun/atmosphere or constellation for the class board when they are helpful, courteous or patient
2. Ongoing R+:
1st Goal- Earth completed
o Read Look to the Stars by Buzz Aldrin
nd
2 Goal-Atmosphere completed
o Watch Bill Nye atmosphere video experiments https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=QeAp3CuGjk8
3rd Goal: Constellations completed
o Explore NASA TV/APP
4th Goal: Moon/Sun completed
o Will complete Space Boot activity, to color, and place around board as frame.
3. Overall R+: Class will participate in making an interactive model of the Sun, Earth and moon, with teams preparing
description resumes of each entity. Students will also create stars with the various constellations upon them, to be
hung up in the classroom.
4. For quick administration for positive behavior: As I hear students using appropriate words, like thank you, proper
names, using their classroom voices, I will hand out small paper, cotton ball, star, etc, as I walk around, as to not
interrupt class. At the end of class, students will apply their tokens to the corresponding area on the large board.
Interactive Learning Activity:
TEKS: 5th GRADE (8) Earth and space. The student knows recognizable patterns in the natural world and among the Sun,
Earth, and Moon system; including (D) identify and compare the physical characteristics of the Sun, Earth, and Moon
Activity: As a class, we will construct an interactive paper model of the Sun, Earth and Moon:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/astronomy/sunearthmoon/. We will also write an index discovery card for each
entity (as teams). Research can be conducted online, books, discussion about previous learning, etc. If additional time
allows, students will construct paper stars with the constellations and/or an alien spaceship, to be hung throughout the
classroom.
Teach Desired Behavior: As each of the rules is reviewed, as a class, each child will choose a sun, moon or earth paper cutout
and write their personal goals on one side and how they can earn it on the other Example: I will use appropriate words/I will
address my classmate by their name. These cutouts will have a hole punched in them, add string and attached to their back
packs for reminders.
Teach the Plan: During warm ups in the morning, we will discuss how students can earn their pieces of paper, cotton balls, etc
and show them how to apply them to the board, based on the expectations set for them. We will review the rules of earning
their rewards and we will practice by first, the teacher modeling to the students and then having the students model to each
other. Teacher will model by addressing each student by name, saying thank you/Good morning/have a nice day/ etc. Use the
ask and respond method throughout the day to reinforce expected behaviors- Thank you for listening and participating in great
discussions, Children respond You are welcome Mrs. Morehouse.
Options: For another behavior, we could expand to other planets and create a race to Mars. As students work as team,
demonstrating a desired behavior, to earn their GO flight status to each planet, not necessarily in order from the sun. When
they reach Mars, they create a paper mache Mars planet from balloons, glue and tissue paper.
