BGSU Office of Education Abroad & International Partnerships

Education Abroad Marketing & Assessment Development Assistant

The Office of Education Abroad
In accordance with the mission of the institution, which emphasizes student preparation for leadership in a global
society, Bowling Green State University students have the opportunity participate in study, intern, teach and volunteer
experiences across the globe. The office of Education Abroad and International Partnerships coordinates these
experiences, which enrich the personal and professional lives of the students who participate in them. Program
opportunities include longstanding faculty-led programs, exchange agreements with institutions overseas, and
agreements with reputable international education providers. As such, a core function of our office is to communicate
the value of BGSU programs abroad to all students on the BGSU campus; with a wide array of program options and
types, we believe that most BGSU students could find programs abroad that contribute meaningfully to their degree, as
well as to their personal and professional development.
Spring 2015 Practicum Position: Marketing & Assessment Development Assistant
Working with the Graduate Assistant, Coordinator, and Director, the Marketing & Development Assistant will perform
two major tasks: help the office develop materials and outreach methods that communicate the value of our programs
to students who tend to go abroad in lesser numbers, and aid in the drafting and implementation of an assessment plan
to assess elements of the efficacy of our international exchange agreements.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students working with our office will be able to build skills around a number of important outcomes in the fields of
Student Affairs and International Education. Specific to student affairs, the practicum will improve skills in the following:

Assessment, Evaluation and Research

o Following Schuh & Upcrafts (2001) framework for assessment in higher education, Assistant will work
with the GA to build an assessment plan which will provide the office with pertinent information
regarding Exchange programs. They will gain experience in survey and/or focus group design and
implementation, as well as assessment design overall. Depending on timeline considerations, the
assistant will also gain experience with data analysis and reporting.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
o The assistant will develop promotional materials that convey the cultural relevancy of our programs to
students of diverse backgrounds. There are a number of ways this can be achieved according to the
capability & confidence of the student under the guidance of the director, including connecting with
other offices on campus to conduct outreach, compiling materials from students of marginalized
identities of students who have gone abroad as a resource for perspective students, and any additional
methods developed at the outset of the semester.

In the field of International Education, the assistant will develop the following competencies described by NAFSA in
2015:

Planning for Comprehensive Internationalization

o Assessment tasks, tools and theories play a primary role in this competency. This practicum provides an
appropriate beginning understanding of these concepts.
Advocacy (cross-cutting competency)
o Inclusive promotional materials and initiatives support the notion of building advocacy, which involves
articulating the benefits of international education to groups according to their unique values and
concerns.
