Learning Outcomes:
Students will research the history of Bastille Day and how it is celebrated in France.
Students will create a tourist brochure using Word to persuade people to go to Tour de
France using facts about culture, history, and current events.[JV1]
Students will analyze holidays and compare Fourth of July to Bastille Day and recognize
similarities and differences from France culture to American culture.
Materials:
Index cards with pictures: A, B, C, D
Strips of paper
Markers
Laptop lab access with internet/Word
Tri-fold guidance sheet
Research worksheet
Anticipatory Set:
Students will be given index cards which will be their plane ticket. The card will have one
letter: A, B, C, D. This letter will represent where on the plane the students will be.
For the students, they will get in groups based on the letter on their plane ticket.
The teacher will explain that we are taking a field trip and traveling to France for the day
where we will be learning about holidays and different festivals based on their culture.
Students will turn and talk to a partner and discuss what information they already know
about France. 3 students will share to the class what they already know about France.
Procedure:
In groups, the teacher will provide students with strips of paper for them to brainstorm
together 2-3 things that they know about Fourth of July.
Teacher will allow time for students to share what information they know about the
Fourth of July to trigger background knowledge.
The teacher will instruct students to come up and tape their strips to the Fourth of July
side of the t-chart on the whiteboard to generate a class list.
The teacher will then instruct students that we will be learning about Bastille Day and we
explain that we may see many similarities to Fourth of July.

Students will use the laptop lab to research the history of Bastille Day and complete their
worksheet.
Once students have completed their research about Bastille Day, the students are going
to research the famous current events that happens in France during this time. (Tour de
France).
The teacher will show the class a map of France and highlight where the bicyclists ride
throughout the country.
Students will work individually with the information from their worksheet and information
they research online and will create a persuasive brochure to sell the event.
The teacher will show students how to create a tri-fold brochure on a Word document
and provide them with a handout to guide their format.
Using the laptop lab in the classroom, students will research briefly and choose either
the Tour de France event happening in modern day France.

Differentiation:
Students will be grouped in randomized groups just to give opportunity for students to
work with other students that they may have not of worked with before.
This meets visual learners when students research online information and then integrate
what they learned into a brochure to visualize the information they learned about Bastille
Day.
Closure:
Teacher will instruct students to come back together as a whole group and ask three
different people to share one thing they learned today about Bastille Day.
Teacher will generate the list on the other side of the t-chart on the whiteboard.
The teacher will ask students to compare and contrast Bastille Day to Fourth of July
using what knowledge they learned and what they already knew.
Students will copy class list on their own t-chart worksheet.
Assessment:
Completed brochure graded with a rubric for neatness and correct information.
Students on task and participating during Bastille Day worksheet, and generating class tchart.
Technology:

Students will have access to the internet through the laptop lab to create their brochures.

Open Microsoft Word located on the desktop of the laptop and select New.
Search in the search bar template.
Choose one of the follow tri-fold templates of your choice.
Begin creating your brochure.
