From fig 5.

12 the required blank diameter for a 120 inch diameter

elliptical dished head is about 152 inch. The weight of the plate is:

The weight of two heads Is 7700 lb.

The Shell weight is:

= 65,500 lb

The volume of one head is given by eq. 5.14

V=0.000076 di^2
=0.000076(120)^2
=131 cu ft per head
The total volume of the two heads is 262 cu ft. the volume of the
shell is:
3.14*(10)^2 8 (68)/4
= 5340 cu ft.
The total volume is:
262 + 5340 =5600 cu ft.
The density of fluid is 59.7 per cu. Ft.
The total weight of fluid
=(59.7)*(5600)
=334,000 lb
The weight of the vessel and its content
=334,000 +65,500+7700
=407,200 lb
Therefore,
Q (load per saddle)=204,000 lb
And
H/L=A/L
=2.5/68 = 0.0368

Maximum Longitudinal bending stress :

The saddle are located close to the heads of the vessel .The
maximum longitudinal bending stress exists at the center of the
span between the saddles and is given by :
Eq 11.8 :

From fig 11.5:K2=0.82

Therefore ,

Since l/r = 0.625/60 = 0.0104>0.005,the compression stress is

not a factor in the design

By Eq 3.15:

Tangential Shear Stress :

As the head serves to stiffen the shell, the tangential shear stress
in the head is given by Eq. 11.27

From Fig 11.10 and with equal to 120 deg.

K5= 0.88
Therefore,
F5= (204,000)*(0.88)/(60)*(0.625)
= 4780 psi
The tangential shear stress in the shell is given by Eq 11.28 ; and
as Tshell equals Thead , the shear stress in the head equals the shear
stress in the shell .

Circumferential stress at horn of saddle:

Since the shell is stiffened by the head since L > 8R , Eq 11.42
gives the circumferential stress at the horn of the middle.

From fig 11.16 A/R =0.5 and = 120 deg ;therefore

K7 = 0.013
For the condition in which no credit for t is taken for the wearplate thickness,

= -4180 10,180
= -14,360 psi
The maximum permissible stress equals :
= 12,650 * 1.25
= 15,800 psi
As the stress Ft is less than the allowable stress, it is not
necessary to take credit for the wear plate.

Fig 11.23 Sketch of vessel in example calculation

Additional stress in Head used as stiffener :

The additional stress induced in the head when it is used as a
stiffener is given by Eq. 11.44.

From fig 11.17 and with equal to 120 deg

Ks = 0.40
Therefore,

For an elliptical dished head (K =2.0) the maximum pressure

stress may be taken as equal to the circumferential hoop stress in
the shell . From Eq. 7.57

By eq. 7.56

Using a one-piece head we find that E=1.0

= 8650 psi

The maximum combined stress in the head equals :

2180 +8650 = 10,830 psi
The maximum allowable stress in the head is :
(12,650)*(1.25)
=15,800 psi

Ring compression in shell over saddle :

The stress in the shell band directly over the saddle is given by
Eq. 11.46

From fig 11.17 and with equal to 120 deg

K = 0.76

=12,700 psi
The allowable stress equals the yield point divided by
two.According to reference 67 the yield point of SA-285, Grade C
steel equals 30,000 psi.
