The Arc de Triomphe Paris Memorial

Flame and the Unknown Soldier

Envisioned by Napoleon in 1806, It took three architects;

Chalgrin, Joust, and Blouet to create this beautiful art
piece. Construction came to a halt in 1814 after the
defeat of Napoleon. It was left unfinished for nine years
until 1823 when construction continued with the
architect, Blout when the reigning king, Louis-Philippe
the First appointed it to be finished. The meaning behind
this structure originally was to represent Napoleon as a
leader but after his defeat, the meaning soon changed to
represent the French Army.

Unknown soldiers are soldiers who fought have

fallen during combat. These soldiers were
unidentifiable at the time and didnt have a place to
rest. The first unknown soldier to be buried was
during WWI. Two years after the burial of the
unknown soldier, Gabriel Boissy, a journalist,
suggested the idea of the memorial flame. This
created a positive reaction from the public. Because
of that, the project moved forward at a rapid pace.
Now everyday at 6:30 pm, a flame is rekindled by
former combatants to honor the fallen soldiers who
have not been able to be identified.
