By age 25, he had a degree in medicine and a degree in


law and he worked as a publisher and journalist
Died: September 12, 1860

Presidential Term: July 12, 1856- May 1, 1857
Assumes Power and becomes the first President of
Nicaragua
He hired soldiers of fortune and between 1853 and 1860
made several attempts to take over territories in Mexico
and Central America.
He invaded lower California and declared it an
independent republic and proclaimed the annexation of
Sonora in 1854.
In 1854, he was forced out by Mexican attacks and
surrendered to US forces and was tried for violating
