1. Preface
1.1 Main Topic
The Internet Resource Guide for Elementary Ocean Research is a brief manual
that will provide the reader with 12 resources necessary for investigation into the
realm of the ocean. The topics of study include marine life, wave structure, and the
effects of pollution on the oceans ecosystem. The detailed descriptions of the vast
array of resources makes it efficient for the reader to complete their research, no
matter what their task may be.
1.2 Targeted Audience
This guide can help anyone interested in the study of the ocean, however the
simplicity of the content makes it more geared toward those studying the basic
principles of the marine world. While it may be of some help to anyone doing
research, this reference book is recommended for people who do not have much
prior experience or knowledge in ocean studies.
1.3 Necessary Skills
In order to use this reference book as a reliable guide, the reader must have the
skills necessary to search links on the internet. Due to the organization of this
manual, and the clarity of the resources, there are not any other necessary abilities.
1.4 Arrangement of Resource Guide
The clarity of this guide makes it extremely simple for the user to complete their
research on marine life, the impact of pollution on the ocean, and wave structure.
The sections are divided up respectively, and each section contains the links for
four resources. Under the link is a clear and concise description of what the reader
will find at the website, along with tips necessary for successful navigation. After
using this guide, all of the readers research needs will be met to complete
satisfaction.

2. Ocean Pollution Resource

This section cover websites that under line issues and pollution dealing with the ocean.
There are websites from government agencies and organizations that deal with their local areas
ocean pollution.
2.1 Primary website 1:
http://wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/blue_planet/problems/
Description:

This website link has valuable information on the ocean, sea and coast, and their corresponding
problems. It has a sub-category about problems associated with the ocean such as unsustainable
fishing, pollution, and oil drilling. Each sub-category gives a brief detail of the problem,
accompanied with a few statistics and several web-links for further insight into the issues.
Tips:
There are topics on the left hand side about different types of water and problems
Also on the left hand side, there is a resource link you can use to specify articles at certain dates

4
2.2 Primary website 2:
https://ypte.org.uk/factsheets/sea-pollution/polluting-the-seas

Description:

This website link highlights different kinds of pollutions affecting the ocean. A brief summary of
each type of pollution and few factsheet/case studies. It is an easy access website that is available
to the public. This site targets information on ocean threats such as oil spills, chemical pollution,
plastic pollution and more, easily obtainable knowledge for anyone who is doing an elementary
research paper.
Tips:
There are topics on the left hand side, click on the specific topics to pull up information about it
Below are related resources for better understanding of general topic of pollution

2.3 Primary website 3:
http://ocean.nationalgeographic.com/ocean/protect/#threats
Description:

This is a government website that highlights several threats affecting the ocean. It provides
images and videos as well as statistics. It also has information on solutions to corresponding
pollutions. This website is a very fun and interactive site for anyone. It has many links that entail
all kinds of ocean pollutions, as well as label certain kinds of species that are endangered by
these pollutions.
Tips:
There are tabs above, just under the title Protecting the Ocean, navigating these tabs give more
insights of the ocean life and stories
The drop box next to the search box give more specific topics on the ocean

6
2.4 Primary Website 4:
http://www.plasticoceans.net/
Description:

This website provides information on plastic pollution affecting the ocean. It is an easily
accessible website made to the public. Its a fun, colorful site that identifies the crisis of plastic
pollution, where the problem is occurring, solutions, and the supporters of this organization. It
also has update feeds such as tweets and newsletters.
Tips
The side widget icon next to the search box has a list of tag as well as an archive and category
drop box to specify your search

3. Wave Structure: This section explains the different wave structures, how they are formed,
and how the wind plays an important factor into it. It explains, the different directions the wind
blows that impacts how the wave take on its actual form.
3.1 Primary Website 1:
http://ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4726578/ (direct website)
Description:

This source is made available to other students can understand the structure of the wave, and
what pushes the waves to go in different directions, and have different speeds. This website is
actually a journal(article) that explains the differences in waves in contrast to the wind pattern.
This article provides various methods of explaining and understanding ocean wave in reference
to how and in what direction the wind blows. It also describes different mathematical references
to finding how the wind effects the wave structure.
Tips:

To find information better in this website, the reader should look at the different subheadings of
each section that explains the importance of the method used. The math equations are essential to

this website, and to understanding how wind patterns are created.

The numbers on the side of the page which divide the sections, also provide the reader with
important facts, and where the different equations are.

3.2 Primary Website 2:
http://earthsky.org/earth/using-light-to-understand-rogue-waves
Description:
This website describes the important factors of wave patterns, and how they are created from the
beginning of time. This website is an educational website which explains the different
mechanism of generating the waves. The information is clearly presented with pictures, and the
main points listed underneath each one to explain what the researchers have found.

Tips:
There pictures with main points listed to better understand about the topic.
The website is divided into paragraphs, this helps to identify the new and old information
researchers have found.

3.3 Primary Website 3:
http://missionscience.nasa.gov/ems/02_anatomy.html
Description:
This website is clearly presented with pictures, and information about the different principles of
waves. It explains the two types of waves; Mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves that are
important to the world. This website defines the two waves, and explains how they are related,
and how they are different from each other.

Tips:

The divided sections of the website are used to give specify the main points of that topic on

waves. This will help the reader find the information in a more efficient way.
On the side of the page there are different topics about the waves listed under Electromagnetic
Spectrum. This can be used to find out more information about each one.
