Refection
Walking in Monday morning I felt nervous and anxious but I did feel more courageous
and brave. I had my mind set that I was going to do better this time than the last time I was there.
My first experience was scary, well I think I just made it hard on myself with entering the room a
nervous wreck the first two days. Although my mentor teacher still said I was quite shy I believe
I did much better about this. Shyness is just something about me I try my best to open up but it
takes time to get to know someone and also time to know what is expected in class. However
after this experience I feel like I gained a great deal I also liked the experience of being with
kindergarten this time. I never knew how much pre-k and kindergarten were different.
Well let me start off by saying that my mentor teacher Mrs. Resendiz is a wonderful
person and of course an awesome teacher. Mrs. Resendiz is one of those teachers that we call
laid back shes just chill if you know what I mean. She takes everything at the students pace and
dose not try to rush them, she gives them plenty of time to work on their assignments, work
together and ask questions for better understanding. Although there was a lot of one on one
testing going on while I was there I enjoyed being able to answer the students questions on their
assignments while Mrs. Resnediz tested each student.

So how did my observation go? It went quite well I can say or at least I think it went
well. On Monday I arrived at the classroom kind of nervous too and as I saw the children arrive
they also seemed nervous because there was a new face in their classroom. Some of them just
stared me down like saying what are you doing here. It was kind of tense at the beginning
because neither the students nor I said a word but after about an hour that tension was lost and
they seemed to know me since the beginning of the year. Monday was kind of hectic with the
teachers going to a meeting and leaving me all three classes together but like Mrs. Salas said it
was a good learning experience and that next time be tougher on them so they know someone is
in authority. After the meeting we went back into the classroom and Mrs. Resendiz explained to
the students that this week they were going to be tested and that this test determined whether or
not they moved on to first grade. With that being said Mrs. Resendiz took her students to the
carpet and reviewed them on their numbers, letters, and the sounds each letter makes. Most of all
the students knew what was going on and were engaged one hundred percent of the time
however I also noticed that some of the students were just going through the motions and
copying their classmates. Should this be something to watch for or how could we as teachers see
that every student understands what we are teaching them. After reviewing Mrs. Resendiz
handed out a booklet for the students to work on they only had a short time to start because it
was already time for recess. The kids love recess I mean what kid doesnt, recess last up to 35-45
minutes and right after recess is lunch time. After lunch I was allowed to answer the students
questions about the booklet while Mrs. Resendiz tested them. To conclude the day Mrs. Resendiz
along with Mrs. Salas and Mrs. Santana took their students on a nature walk outside. Their task
was to observe the milkweed plant and to look closely to see if there were any eggs on these
plants. Mrs. Salas explained to the students that these plants are used to lay eggs because they are

so sticky and that by ripping one of the leaves off a white milky substance comes out. After being
outside and observing the plants it was time to head back inside and get ready to go home.
Tuesday morning started out about the same as the day before, the teachers went to their
meeting but this time I only had Mrs. Resendiz class and half of Mrs. Santanas. I told myself in
my mind that this time was going to be different and that I was going to do better than before and
sure enough just like Mrs. Salas said by being a little tougher the students listened to what I said.
After the meeting Mrs. Rezendiz had the students write a phrase she put up on the board and then
they were to fill in the blank. I was allowed to help the students with their spelling of colors and
numbers in this assignment. After the kids started finishing up they were then told to finish up
the booklet they had started yesterday. We spent pretty much all morning doing the booklet some
even got finished while others were only about half way there. This was a pretty good visual on
seeing how some children work faster than others. After finishing up the booklets it was time for
recess and like on Monday right after recess is lunch time. After lunch on Tuesday Mrs. Resendiz
began testing the students again one by one and in that time she would send the students one by
one to read me their book. I thought it was very impressive how well the kids knew how to read
and pronounce the words. When Mrs. Resendiz was done testing the students she began her math
lesson it was on a concept of understanding that a bundle meant ten and counting the rest to get
your answer. Mrs. Resendiz sent me her two students that had the most trouble in the concept of
math so I could get the feel that some students struggle more than others. As I was working with
them I could see what she meant by saying that they struggled in math, I kept repeating to them
that the picture of a bundle of sticks meant ten but it was like they did not understand what I was
talking about. I helped them the best I could with their counting and also writing their numbers.
After the kids started finishing up they were allowed to play in centers during this time I helped

some of the others that were still not finished and like this I concluded my day and it was time to
go home.
Although I might not have done as well as I thought I believe I improved and gained a
great deal of knowledge. I also like the fact that this time I was in a bilingual classroom which is
what I want to get into. Am not saying that my first experience was not a good experience but
what I really want to get into is ESL or Bilingual teaching so I really enjoyed being is Mrs.
Resendiz classroom. I feel like two days was just not enough I still wanted to go back and spend
more time with the kids. I really enjoyed getting to meet Mrs. Resendiz as well as the other two
bilingual teachers Mrs. Salas and Mrs. Santana, these three work together in a team to teach their
children and also give advice from one to another on how to teach the lesson. I really hope that
one day I have the relationship that these three have but most importantly I hope one day I can be
as great of a teacher as all of them.
